Di Canio on his time at Sunderland

“I was too good, my level was too high," he said of his experience at Sunderland.

“What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger. I can’t wait to have another chance with the right people. I feel a better manager than before.

“Even if I have requests from around Europe I say no.

“There is no space for me in England at the moment but I will wait.

“It would be stupid for a chairman not to call me. Even if it’s at a Championship club with a project."

Clearly the only way to get back into the job is to big yourself up.

He was actually pretty good at Swindon (I live in Swindon, so follow them quite a bit). However his management style ultimately requires absolute faith in him from both the players and the board, and it was always going to be very hard to get that in the Premier League. He'd be OK for lower league clubs that aren't too short of cash, but that's not really saying much to be honest, and after having gone to Sunderland he may well have priced himself out of that market anyway.
