Is 74 points enough for 4th?

We have been returning an average 2 points per game over the last 10 games, where our season average has been a little lower at 1.9 over the 21 games played.(its slightly higher at 2.6points per game during Tims tenure)

If we extended our recent form to rack up another 34 points from our remaining 17 fixtures, we would end up on 74 points for the season, which has been enough to secure 4th place on all but one season since the premier league started back in 1992.

If we concluded on our season average of 1.9, we would end up with 72, which has been enough on all but 2 seasons of the premier league era.

Obviously each season is diferent, and the amount of points required has varied massively over the years - what do you think? is 74 points likely? and will it be enough this season? we are pretty much relying on Liverpool and Everton not having the squad depth or stamina to sustain their current or season points average, whilst remaining immune ourselves, and also Man utd not improving. - so not a lot then

This is what it might need...
Possible 3-pointers:
Hull; Norwich; Cardiff; S'hampton; West Brom; Sunderland; Fulham; Stoke; West Ham; VIlla

Possible 1-pointers:
Newcastle; Swansea; Everton; Liverpool.

Possible 0-pointers:
Man City; Chelsea; Arsenal.

17 games with 34 points + 40 points already on the board = 74points

Iinterestingly; using the last ten games as a guide to end of season points, Everton also end up on 74 and so do Liverpool (not including the stoke game)

Oddiy,
sorry pal he just winds me up. I continually try and give him a fair crack but he never reads posts and uses the old lifelong supporter stuff too much for my liking.

74 is a lot of points but I still think it's maybe 5 games too early for this article.

Again sorry if I spoilt the tone.

No worries mate - Good idea actually - I could do a review of this when we get to 30 games to see how the 2 points a game is going, and to see how the other three teams are doing with theirs

And in fairness, telling Sandy he is a is like telling water its wet, he won the ja606 competition for a reason ...and is proud of it

Legit ed at the 'water it's wet' bit!

Anyway back to the original theme, a lot will depend on how the teams fare in Europe after February and whether they can sustain the pace or conversely generate momentum. Man united have a fairly easy champs league last-16 game so you'd expect them to get through, but then after that who knows? Then you've got Liverpool and Everton free of distractions who can stay fresher during the final months. With the number of teams around it might well require at least 72 points to do it. For the contenders you're asking if they can take between 27 and 35 points in 17 games which seems very achievable

Both Liverpool Everton have had no other commitments for the 1st half of the season. Now that we are out of and they are still in the FA Cup it may just balance out with our Europa adventures.
It's an exciting season all round!

Whilst it may seem like all the top teams cant stop winning and so may be heading for a Top 4 or over 80 points (i think thats what someone suggested anyway) but you have to take into consideration that the Top 6 teams, say; have to play eachother and therefore points will be lost as well as won. I think this will almost mathematically ensure that the Top 4 will not all be in the +80 point region.

In saying this, there are a lot more consistent teams in the Premiership at the moment, although this was a contrast to the first few week of the season where we all saw, if anything, more weaknessses in the top sides than before due to new managers (City, Chelsea and Utd), lack of strengthening (Arsenal - at that time), and then you have the more surprising candidates of LFC (not so much i suppose) and Everton (big surprise to many).
