BR is obviously doing this and encouraging that he play further and further back as his age steers towards retirement...
When Joe Allen comes back could anyone see Gerrard and Lucas competing for the same position in the team and then have Henderson and Allen alongside them in the midfield?
So going forward both Henderson and Allen can attack and defend from the forward rolls, charge down the opposition a lot better and cope with the more dynamic midfields that Gerrard perhaps struggles with due to the energy levels required.
Sitting in front of the back four if (big massive if here) his positional play is correct and we all know he can tackle then he would in turn break play up and use his extensive passing range to unleash the beast aka SAS?
Thoughts?
Pushing Gerrard further Back...

Totally agree thats what my thinking was when writing the article, I think that is the way we are going forward as a team. Be very interesting to see how he does it, just a shame it is one of those seasons where tactically the team has be be absolutely astute at all times because dropped points in "expected winnable games" is the difference between top four and Europa...

Maybe it's because BR knows we can't sign whoever his centre mid target is this month so will alternate for the rest of the season with what he has to get the best out of all four of them.

good point,
was wondering if it was a bit of both to be honest, BR saying look we need players, and also preparing for the worst if for whatever reason we cant get them this jan.

Gerrard
Love the idea of the sweeper role.
Still buzzing after that game, we just looked like we could get a goal whenever we wanted. I came over all GB!

I would rahter him play in this role than find a place for him furhter forward due to the high intensity pressing game that we have adopted.
I think Hendo has been fantastic this season at making this work and Im hoping we can bring in another attack minded all action midfielder this month to join him.
with Lucas, Allen and Alberto off the bench if needed i think we wil begin to have the depth we have been looking for in midfield.
Still need a leader at the back though...the stupid mistakes are killing me!!!!!

This is the role that Gerrard plays for England and has played it well for England. I thought his performance was a 6 out of 10 yesterday. The only goal he could have done better maybe was the 3rd but I still blame defenders and keeper for that goal.
For 2nd goal he was sold down the river by a poor back pass from Hendo. I think he played that role very well. He took possession of the defender and was always available for all the team. His passing short, quick and long was good overall and I'd rather have Gerrard play that role than Lucas.
Unfortunately the player that struggled was Lucas.

I did think it was odd to push Lucas further forward. I can see what Rodgers is trying to do but if we do not have the right personnel available it does seem a bit odd.

As I have been saying on here for ages, Gerrard or Lucas is certainly preferable to Gerrard and Lucas.

I thought Gerrard was lacking a bit yesterday but he's only just coming back from injury but he just kept smashing the ball down the flanks to nobody!
