Vardy v Rooney

Having endured that typical England lacklustre display last night, the player who least impresses me for his country is Rooney.
When did he last play well for his country? Whilst at Man u he might have the odd flash if brilliance , he has not progressed as a player in recent years, and last night hardly broke sweat.
Compare that to Vardy, he is improved vastly this season , and whilst far from the complete striker we cannot doubt his effort and he always runs for 90 minutes and gives 100 percent. He has also lost weight and his fitness is outstanding.
Last night we saw an overpaid , overweight player , lumbering around the pitch with little movement or creativity.
His shooting was worse than some of ours.
The team improved when he went off, and i dont think he will be any better in the World Cup, hope i am wrong.
Vardy may not have is talent, but always gives his all.
I know who i would rather have in my team.

Are we seriosuly comparing rooney and vardy? Vardy has had a brilliant season for us, but he isnt a patch on rooney!
Yes rooney isnt as good for england as he is for utd bbut that can be said about most of the england squad. To me thats down to the manager and trying to fit square pegs in round holes

I can't help but feel that we haven't found Rooney's best position or England, and I don't think 4-3-3 worked last night. Given what we have, I'd rather go with 4-2-3-1, with Rooney in the middle of the 3 and Sturridge up front. 4-3-3 as it was meant that Rooney kept breaking formation and Sturridge was largely wasted.

However, it was very interesting to see Shaw and Lallana come on last night. For years I've wondered why the England team don't play to their strengths - pace and quick attacks instead of trying to play like Spain and failing miserably while being mind-numbingly boring at the same time. Seeing Lallana tricking defenders and the Denmark back line pedalling back wildly as Shaw charged at them, I'm left wondering this even more. If Rooney is unable to adjust and play a lot sharper stuff in an England shirt then I'd seriously consider not starting him at the World Cup and giving someone like Barkley, Wilshere or Lallana a go in that role instead. However, there's still no doubt in my mind that he's a quality player and the best attacking option England has. We just need him to start producing.

Whilst I don’t think that Wayne Rooney has realised some of the potential that he showed as a 17 year old he is still at a different level from Vardy – despite the fact that we all love Vardy and his attitude and application.

My frustration with the England team is that they play at a pedestrian pace (particularly in friendlies) and appear to have a fear of being beaten. They aren’t technically as good as the better teams in world football and I just wish they’d accept that, in the short term, that isn’t going to change. I would much rather them approach international football with pace, power and attacking intent. They may get beaten by the better teams, but at least they would go out all guns blazing and may even surprise a few people in the process. At the moment they’ll exit the world cup anyway, but in the process play a soporific brand of football that will bore us all to death. I suspect that if Vardy did play international football for England he’d look like the same frustrated and isolated figure that Rooney often does.

It isn’t really surprising that Man Utd fans only care about their club and not about England. Following the usual profile of a Man United supporter I’d expect them to support Brazil anyway and probably have done since they were three.

Incidentally, Vardy has been pressurising Championship defenders into mistakes all season. The defenders in the Premiership or at the World Cup will have a lot better technique and be more comfortable on the ball and I suspect he'd just look like a headless chiken. Sorry, but he's got to prove that what he does works in the Premiership first, and even then he's a long way off the England team!

I know that some of our team and individual performances this year have caused a great deal of excitement, but comparing Rooney to Vardy is another leap altogether. I suppose as an outsider looking in you would have to conclude that it is a bit ridiculous really.

The step up from Championship to Premier League will probably be as big as the step Vardy has made from Non League to Championship. If we do go up and if Vardy does handle that transition (two big ifs) as well as he’s made the first jump then we might be able to assess this time next year whether any comparison isn’t quite as absurd as it appears just now.

Well, I'm not sure it's reasonable to expect some guy who has lived all his life in Shanghai to support England.

Is this is a wind-up or were you seriously considering Vardy would do a better job for England than Rooney?

I think you need to have a nice lie down in a darkened room, Thorny, with a cool compress laid on your forehead, and come out only when you are quite better again.

Agree totally Dunge- England were a lot better when Rooney came off.

I'd have a midfield of Gerrard, Wilshere and Lallana and a front 3 of Sturridge, Sterling and Townsend. This might give us some energy and pace for a change.
