Just heard that Fabianski has rejected a new three year contract. I guess this is to be expected; he is clearly number two but his recent performances must surely mean that he could be number one; if he left.

Personally I've always liked Lukasz. He had a dodgy spell, but seems solid these days. I'd like him to stay, but clearly he won't, not as second choice, so seems bound to leave. Anyway, I wish him all the best, so looks like we'll certainly need a new back-up keeper now.

TBH how many keepers out there who are available and as good as or better than fabianski would come to us and be happy with second choice
i think we'll find it difficult to replace him
personally id go for a keeper nearing retirement. experienced, reliable and would help szczesnys development

Exactly. That's the point isn't it? In any other position injuries, suspension, rotation mean that you'll get regular games. The number one keeper will play most games, and the back-up will be just that; second choice.
Fabs is a much better "number 2" than most, but he won't replace Szczeny. An older keeper, towards the end of his career is probably the only realistic choice, as an up and coming keeper won't want to be number two.

I agree he's done really well when he's been called upon. But I disagree that he should be the number 1.
Think Chesney has been consistent and for a lad of 22/23 at this level, that's what it's all about and should be commended. He'll improve further I don't mind betting.
Longterm, Chesney could go on to be one of the all time Arsenal great keepers, if he continues to imporve at the rate he has done in the last year or so, I feel that strongly about him!

Fabianski has never played 4-5 games in a row, so we can't judge him on form. Hope he reinvigorates his career elsewhere. Mannone was wise to leave earlier in his career and has made a good home for himself at Sunderland.

he played as our first choice keeper from september 2010-january 2011
thats slightly more than 4-5 games. ok he missed 1 game in december to szczesny but thats it

Clearly it's also not ust a case of him being a no.2, but also being a no.2 behind a clear rival for his national goalkeeping spot. If he wants to move on then that's fair enough and he will be difficult to replace.

He has played 4-5 games in a row and when he did he looked amazing. Its a shame Szez injured him in the Man City game 2 seasons bk as it looked like Fab was the no1 then.
Poor guy would get injured once he dislodged szez and the szez would get his form bk.
I really hope he goes to a good club as no1. I hate it if he went to another pl team as i actually think he would be really good.

I'll stand by this;
When the pressure is off and/or expectations are not particularly high, Fabianski can and usually will put in a performance.
It's when the pressure is on, that's when he has had a tendency to buckle spectacularly.
I appreciate as he gets on in years, he'll grow into his own skin etc, but it's the mental part of his game that's let him down, not the technical or physical. Wenger said as much... In fact he said technically he's almost certainly the 'best' goalkeeper that he's ever worked with, that's some accolade, eh?
Chesney almost had the opposite problem, he had all the confidence in the World and more front than Southend!
Whilst this did him a lot of favours in some respects, it all resulted in him making some pretty irrational decisions. The best learn from that and (imo) Chesney has done. I don't think I'm talking out of turn in saying that the young Pole has most certainly been one of the best (& most consistent) keepers in what has been an incredibly competitive Premier League season thus far!

I still maintain that the Porto incident wasn't his fault. He had the ball taken off him by the referee, it wasn't like he just handed over the ball to Porto willingly. And I'm still not convinced that it was a backpass anyway.
