Southampton: Give us £40m for Shaw!

Another day and more news on the Luke Shaw transfer saga.

"Manchester United are refusing to pay over the odds for England left-back Luke Shaw, 18, after Southampton upped his price tag to £40m." - http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/gossip/

It then links to this article:

"United refusing to pay over the odds for Shaw

Reports had suggested that the Reds were willing to offer £34m for the Southampton defender, but M.E.N Sport can reveal that is wide of the mark.

United are still keen on bringing Luke Shaw to Old Trafford – but will not pay over the odds for the Southampton left-back.

The Reds have already had one bid of £25m for the England star rejected but reports suggesting United had increased their valuation to £34m and submitted a new bid are thought to have been untrue."

The rest of the article goes on about Evra signing a new contract, Buttner leaving and Rio signing for QPR.

Nowhere does it say Southapton have asked for £40million that the BBC have on their gossip's page. It just says United will not pay over the odds and mentions the previous bid being £25m, not the widely reported £27m or the £30m. But we do have the Daily Star running that story (http://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/385440/Southampton-slap-a-staggering-40m-price-tag-on-Manchester-United-target-Luke-Shaw) and other websites, whose transfer news/gossip is as reliable as RVP Left Foot's posting on the same subject.

I have no idea what is going on here, but I don't want us to waste time and drag this on. If they don't accept and we are not willing to pay more, then we should move onto other targets (if we were not already working on them in tandem).

Alternatives under £20m:
Alberto Moreno, 21 (Sevilla) [£18m]
Filipe Luis, 28 (Atletico Madrid) - Probably not worth pursuing as he will cost around £20m, is 28 so can offer around 4 years service.
Daley Blind, 24 (Ajax) - Can play DM and LB [£12m]
Bruno Martins Indi, 22 (Feyenoord) - Can play CB and LB [£8m]
Ricardo Rodriguez, 21 (Wolfsburg) [£15m]

He is not a 100% sure but that's what the grapevine suggests internally. Everyone's being very careful these days as some people have been let go for leaking the Moyes sack to the press

So he can tell you who we have signed and show you contracts but not prepared to tell you when they will be announced. right.

Anyone who authorises the payment of 25-30m for his services is a fool
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not just a fool. Should be committed of wasting that amount of cash on a player who's not even the best full back out there. If you are paying a potential record fee for a full back, then get the best one, not some hyped up young English tax special.

Really despair of the stupid, stupid prices bandied about for young English players.

And as 40m...whoever sanctions that for shaw should be immediately sacked.

It's not his department that deals with stuff like that.

Ah! You saw my post! There may be a lie there somewhere

Right. I was trying to see how credible your claims were. I have to say your account seems consistent and you didnt fold under questioning. You passed the test. I'm prepared to accept this may happen. Congratulations.

I'm not 100% convinced as well. Taking him at face value which is why I have not spammed the board with it.

We shall see

RDD Luke Shaw may turn out to be the best LB on history but at of this moment in time something like 25-30 million pounds will probably get you the best LB available right now. That is a awful lot to drop on a player who could go on to be the best or one of the biggest flops. You just have to remember Kevin Davies to Blackburn or Jeffers to Arsenal (the fees paid were very big for the time).

He could turn out to be the best LB ever...but I' very much doubt it. He will by all accounts turn out to be a solid unspectacular LB, vastly overrated by the gushing pundits. That's not a knock against shaw, as I feel he will turn out to be a decent player, but he won't eat from the top table and that 25-30m is a idiotic amount to spend on him.
