The 3-5-2 formation has been the fashionable system this world cup. Teams like Costa Rica, Holland and Chile have had great success with it. It offers the chance to play real attacking fullbacks, lots of movement up front from the strikers with runners from midfield linking the play. Its also flexible enough to offer a real threat on the counter attack with the right players and pace through the team.
It seems that McCoist has taken some real inspiration from this and rightly so in my opinion. The football that, Chile in particular, produced was exciting and expansive what you'd want to go and watch.
Unfortunately though he seems to have got his maths wrong and instead stuck 5 at the back 4 in the middle and a lone striker up front. In any team with a lone striker you need players who are going to get up in support from both the wings and a box to box player through the middle. Playing Ian Black and McCulloch in the middle does not offer any sort of dynamism or link up play from midfield to the front man and as a result the lone striker ends up isolated and you offer nothing going forward.
McCoist did something similar but with a different formation in the December 2011 game at Celtic Park where Jelavic and Lafferty were left with no support through the middle and long balls galore which allowed Celtic to dominate.
Playing 5 at the back and 4 in midfield with the players that McCoist likes to play and the brand of football he prefers to use offers nothing going forward to the extent that even a college team were able to keep Scottish Internationals, Boyd and Miller at arms length. You could have had Messi up front and he would have struggled to create.
It also seems like this system is here to stay according to McCoist
“We tried the new formation in the first half and it’s going to take time to get used to it. But they looked hungry and sharp and they move the ball really well, they caused us a few problems.
“They were quick all over the pitch and you can maybe see they are a few games ahead of us in that respect."
Ally McCoist used a 5-4-1 formation at the start of the game with Foster given a license to push further up the pitch from his right-back berth.
Unless there is a change in ethos and a change in personnel or footballing philosophy then I cant see his 5-4-1 getting off the ground or winning over the supporters. It seems like an excuse to play all his old favourites in the one team.
A new spin on 3-5-2

You have tried desperately to pummel mccoist on this thread but bears keep throwing up good arguments against that
I'd say he has every right to pummel McCoist even though he is not for the simple fact him and his players got pumped by Chad Hogan and his mates

In theory it works with the number of playrrs we have.
However the players we have in the main are rather crap and don't suit the system. I.e. Jig, McGregor, Mohsni, Foster etc.
Sooner mccoist leaves the better.
