Burke

John Percy has just tweeted that Chris Burke is joining us on a free transfer. Personally, very happy with this one, he's the type of player we're missing.

You say generally doesn't do very well? I don't get that! Where had he not done well and what is you definition of well?

He is one of very bery few English managers to have won anything with any team anywhere. That alone for me means he is a decent manager. He took Boro to the Europa league final, that's pretty good in my book. Having a bad 12 game spell for forest when the club was a complete shambles doesn't dent that reputation for me.

But it's all about opinions I guess.

If Pearce has the same record as McClaren after 12 games will you want him out?

At Middleborough he achieved in a short period but was backed and for a lot of it was really despised by the fans. Remember the guy who ran on the pitch and chucked his season ticket. He failed with England, Wolfsberg, Forest and Twente second time.

I think he does alright if the circumstances are really well suited at the time but sorry I don't rate him. He's also got this false air around him of trying to manage the media as well, I suppose that's the Max Clifford guidance he had in the past coming out.

I'm not sure you can class Forest as a failure as he wasn't given the backing he was promised. I actually think he did the decent thing and left when he realised he wasn't going to be able to work as he had done (I'm sure one of you lot said he left without payout too, good man.)

I'm also not sure you can state his second time at Twente was a failure too, he'd gotten them through to the knockout stage in the Euro and they were lying 5th in the league, 6 pts behind PSV.

It's how you define failure I guess!

Indint think be failed at Wolfsberg, he certainly didn't get them relegated or anything close. He also took over after a period of unprecedented success and they had sold players.

Surely if SM is a failure or a bad manager then god knows what every other manager we have had (in recent times) is? None of them have had any success have they? And if you judge Pearce by the same standards I am not sure you can argue he is a good manager?

The jury is out with Pearce it's been an age since he was a club manager and we all know the constraints/problems U21's selections give. He still got them to a final though for the first time in donkeys.

As I say, some managers can fit certain clubs and scenarios whereas fail at others. Most managers will have a number of failures on their CV's but I guess for Schteve, the fact that I dislike him doesn't help. Plus he then went on to fail quite badly with England and make himself look like a complete plank.

Pearce is a risk in a lot of ways, but there is a chance it could come off and no-one in the game has more passion for our club than him. I'm really cautious about having any expectations, but I am behind him, he seems to be doing the right things squad wise at least

Yeah I agree he is a risk. But then most managers that we could appoint are a risk these days. I also think he could do well. But again it depends on how yi define failure? Is finishing 7th failure? In this league I am not so sure. That's why I think managers new longer. If he finishes 7th this year then as long as he improves the year after that's good enough for me.

I just think we have had a fair few managers not given enough time and unfairly branded failures. I don't think any of them were useless managers either. But I suppose if success needs to be instant then they all failed in that respect. If failure is not promotion at the first attempt then they failed at that too!

Let's hope there is no more failure!

Whatever your opinion of McClaren I thought to was commendable to walk away without a pay off. He could have stuck to his guns and backed Doughty into a corner and where would Forest have been then?

I think he is a mid ranking manager who bought badly at Forest, especially Boateng and Miller, so was hamstrung from that point on. Breaking the wage structure was a terrible decision which set the lesser paid players against him.

He inherited a decent team at Derby but it will be very interesting to see how he does next season now there is a bit of expectation around the place and he has been dealt the Thorne blow.

Whatever you say about McClaren, he's an honourable bloke. What might he have acheived given the spending that Billy and Pearce have been given? He can coach, thats wwidely acknowledged but can he buy? Im not so sure.
