Carrick as a CB?

A lot of people on here think Carrick is finished in CM, especially if we bring in a couple of top midfielders but does anyone think that in a 3 man central defence he could fill in there if needed and maybe even on a more permanent basis. He could play the ball playing role well and pretty much sits back at OT with our normal 2 CBs anyway. Some website did an article last year saying that when we play home games against the lesser sides we play a sort of 3-5-2 with Carrick sitting back with Rio and Vidic while our full backs bomb forward.

Obviously we all want top CBs signed but if Van Gaal thinks the ones we've got are good enough with Carrick as cover do people think he would do a good job (in a 3 man defence)?

2012/13 - 2 goals and 4 assists.
2011/12 - 2 goals and 3 assists.

So the last 2 non-Moyes seasons he has exceeded the target you have set...

Those are pretty horrific stats

So he's in decline rvp...

That suggests he will be scorinf and contributing own goals next season...

If you want to use the Moyes season as an indicator then pretty much everyone is "in decline"

But still, they both beat French's target

I think he might be able to do a job there. Ppl here think that they need pretty much similar CMs to what they see in a standard 442 but with 3 at the back andf a high line, you need someone who is comfortable in possession.

Anyways time will tell but I think LVG would probably play him there

Problem is he cannot defend in a physical sense

I suppose the defending can be done by the other 2 in the 3, Carrick can do the intercepting and ball retention/distribution.

Disclaimer: I'm not advocating it but I can see why it has been suggested and am simply pointing out how it might work.

I'm not sure there is such a great difference between a central midfielder who drops deep to receive the ball and to occupy space as full backs attack and a central defender in a back three who can step forward and influence play.

In the right context (ie not 442) you might want a player at the back with the skill set of a midfielder. Barcelona have done it a lot and come out ahead.

RR

Barcelona happen to have some of the best midfielders and attackers in the world.

VC, indeed. But in terms of competing in the Premiership this season, if we buy one more top class midfielder, we'll have a superb midfield and attack (let's say front five of Rooney, RVP, Mata, Herrera + Vidal or comparable quality). If the third defender behind that lot is closing down space and acting as the sweeper, with the other two doing more of the dirty work, I don't think it's preposterous to conceive of Carrick doing a job there. Not a world class job, but as cover for injuries (i.e. I do of course believe we need to buy a CB) in a season where we're only playing domestic football.
