No.

He was against playing with 3 cb's in the first place.

His thinking is that your back three just need to be defenders.

His theory is that 3 cb's play to narrow because they are naturally drawn into the centre.

I think that has very much been the case in our first two games.

We have been to narrow and the wing backs have dropped in to fill the two gaps that shouldn't be there. Something that didn't happen on tour.

Didn't Adams piece also say that the three CB's could get dragged wide leaving space in the middle.

SLM, yeah that's also true, and why I think it's a difficult system to perfect - especially when using defenders who have always played in a back four so don't have the same tactical understanding as defenders that have been coached to play in different systems.

That's why it's gonna take months to perfect and will see us drop quite a few points.

It's a huge risk from the club to appoint a manager who is coming in to take such a risk. I don't think we'll get top 4. We may well be much better next season and challenge for things and perhaps that's fine with the club and maybe even with me.

I wonder if the fans would be so patient if that happened. Half a season getting used to a system that would only bear fruit from next season.

Rob, in fairness, I'm not sure the club appointed him knowing he'd come in and play a back three.

They must have sounded him out a before Moyes was even sacked and I bet you the success of that system with the Dutch has heavily influenced Van Gaal's decision to use it - as well as our lack of wingers and wanting to get Mata, Rooney and RVP central.

I do agree it can be a risk, and may see us fall off the pace, but I wouldn't necessarily say it's the club taking the risk with the appointment more-so the manager taking the risk with the tactics.

But we'll have to wait and see. We potentially have more players coming in and we have players to come back from injury. So we may not drop as many points in the initial phase of the system as the first couple of games might suggest we will.

I hope so but I have a strong feeling that this system will take at least a couple of months to perfect.

From memory it the defence weren't that great in the world cup and it was really Robben playing as a striker who made Holland the success they were rather than anything to do with a back 3.

Fingers crossed Di Maria kicks some ass Robben style.

The defence was pretty good. They conceded two dodgy pens and two screamers in the tournament. Pretty good if you ask me.

That said, I'm inclined to agree that a lot of its success was to do with Robben. And as mentioned before the Dutch players are coached from a young age to be adaptable in different systems - plus I think some of the Feyenoord players had played it at club level also, which supposedly contributed to his decision to play that system

We shall see. I still have my doubts about it as well.

You may be right. I did remember the Dutch defenders hoofing the ball forwards a lot in Robbens direction.

Not so classy

Yeah Italy and Juve seem to play quite a few long balls with the formation as well - not as much as the Dutch though as they have a far better midfield and defence to play out from the back and through the middle.

How many flying wingers are there in Italy?

There is a reason why it works there.
