RVP, Rooney, Mata, Valencia

Dreadful

posted on 30/8/14

We have 2 major issues. Not good enough quality of drive from CM meaning there is no link between defence and midfield which results in long balls from deep. While the other is trying to fit RVP, Rooney and Mata all centrally, it just doesn't work.

Mata was ineffective because Rooney was working in his preferred space.

RVP was rusty and had a poor game but he still had the best 2 chances for us all 90 minutes.

Rooney was supposed to be a striker but was dropping deep into Mata's area all game. He had some nice touches but equally had some terrible ones. For an attacking player today he created virtually nothing.

If Mata has a hamstring injury it may well help us as it would force us to not play all 3. If he is then I hope we try Rooney behind RVP with 3 in the middle, of Herrera, Blind and di Maria.

I actually thought Valencia was your most dangerous player in the last 15 mins. At least he was running at the fullback and looking to whip a ball in. Young was just.......well, being Young I guess.

A touch over £200m spent in the last year Earl. I don't think it's the Glazers not funding purchases, its who the manager/s are selecting. Mata and Fellaini weren't really the players you needed and I wonder about the price paid for Shaw.

But don't forget, of that £200m worth of players spent, only 2 players were available today. You lot do have a lot of injuries.

Ahh. Sorry Earl, thought you were being serious

I'm sure once the new players come in and the injured players return you'll be fine, but today was flat to say the least.

I do hope thats ironic. It could be argued too much money caused this problem. Mata and RvP and Rooney as a front three is easily the most ineffective attack in the top 10 and well if I remember correctly the argument against RvP was how effective he would be when he crossed the 30 year mark but no one cared because he could provide one good year and Mata was a "statement signing" who just is not a united player.
