What's the answer Kenny?

After a highly successful visit to League One and a bright start to this season, Wolves have arrived at a bit of a crossroads. They are still well in touch with the promotion challengers at the moment but clearly won't stay there unless results improve again. It's one win in the last seven games now.

And having built the club around a sound defence, that's all gone pear shaped now with 11 goals conceded in the last 4 games. A change to the defence didn't help yesterday so should Kenny just stick with what has been a reliable back 4 until recently or is a change needed?

And until a month ago Wolves were not scoring enough but in the last 4 games we have netted 9 times and that should be plenty to have got more points.

I don't understand why Michael Jacobs has not had a game this season and he is one player that might give the midfield a lift. But it's the back line that's in focus now and it's feeling that we were wrong to have not brought in more cover and competition in the summer.

It wasn't a time wasting change, we were under pressure and he decided to bring on a more experienced defender specifically for that free kick initially. If there is any criticism to be made then I would have taken Evans or Edwards off rather than Ebanks Landell to give us an extra defender.

Have to agree DJ. If Stears was needed to bolster the defence for the last few minutes then the sensible thing would have been to take of a more attacking player. As to the time wasting issue, if the ref thought that that was Kenny's intention then he was allowed to add that time on at the end.

Just to clear up the discussion regarding the substitution, the Laws of the Game states:

•the substitute only enters the field of play at the halfway line and during a stoppage in the match
•the substitution is completed when a substitute enters the field of play

Some refs allow the player time to take-up his position, but he does not have to. The ref on Saturday was perfectly within his right to start play once Stearman stepped onto the pitch.

Kenny made the mistake and should be big enough to admit it.

I have spoken to a non league ref this morning and while that is the rules Cyp, he has told me that he has never known a referee not allow a sub to get into position before restarting the game, and neither have I, and I guess neither has Kenny Jackett.

I take your point, DJ, the general convention is to let the player take up his position, but the ref does not have to.
Probably as concerning as the furore surrounding the substitution, what were the other 10 players doing while waiting for Stears to get in position? There still should have been sufficient men in the box to mark the Millwall players and especially the dangerous Fuller who had earlier scored the second goal!

That's due to the problem obtaining a work permit and the fact that they have learnt that Cyprus bureaucracy is the worst in the Northern Hemisphere.

Cyp - Stearman was brought on to mark Fuller so the other players like me, were expecting the referee to allow him the time to get there, as would normally be the case. I attach no blame to Kenny or the other players for what happened but clearly some take a different view

DJ if E.E-L was doing a good job marking Fuller why swap him and if he wasn’t why wait until 30 minutes after Fuller came on to make the swap?

Either way making the change with 3 minutes to go while we were defending a set piece was the wrong decision in my opinion.

No question that the referee was to blame and made a mistake and when challenged by the Wolves players after the goal he appeared to be apologetic. To say that the ref can restart the game as soon as the sub enters the field is just plain rubbish.
=======================
You are wrong DJ, as the rules clearly state that a game is 'live' once the substitute has entered the field of play. Again your use of the word rubbish is rubbish.

KJ was at fault for making the change when he did, it's as simple as that and most other posters are telling you the same.

The unwritten rule in football is never make a change when defending set pieces.
