Samuel Eto'o

After his great performance yesterday it got me thinking when people name great players over the years he rarely gets a mention. So do people think of him as a great player or a great player for a couple of seasons only or simply a good player or a mercenary even or not in the top echelons of the game.
I think he is the kind of player at his age that needs to be playing every week and you will still see his class. Still a very good player with a good footballing brain as pointed out on MOTD.

Eto'o's done it all in both club and international football. His achievements definitely put him up there.

I agree but in these lists of greats you don't get people mentioning him much. Van Basten, original Ronaldo, Baggio, Del pier, Batistuta, Zlatan, ...they all get mentions regularly
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Because all of those players are/were better than Eto'o despite being a great player in his own right
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Perhaps but as you said he was one of the best strikers in the world for a few years so that should warrant a few mentions. Anyhow we are agreed he was a top striker and actually still looks good. His Russian venture was all about money and it taints him a little I think

Eto'o in his prime was better than Zlatan and Del Peiro

In the same class as the likes of RVN, RVP, Villa, Torres at their best.

An argument for Zlatan, but not King Alex, not on your nelly

What bribes?

I'd have Eto'o over Remy at the moment. As good as Eto'o was for us last season, he was nowhere near as good as Drogba in plucking balls out of the air, controlling it and passing it on to one of the AM's. Eto'o apart from Pace, I think he does everything else better than Remy.

On the flip side, he's pumped a lot of what he's made back into creating opportunities for kids back in Cameroon.

In his playing days in Spain he was also one of the most outspoken critics of racism in the game.

Fiery character at times, but has a heart of gold imo.

Amazing player, in his day none better.

He is a great player to have for a free transfer and has more goals than many costly purchases for other clubs. No longer has the pace to break away from a defender, but we don't play that way and have others who do that, he offers class and experience to an inexperienced frontline

Haven't watched him for some time tbh, but I'd say that as well as his outright pace, one of his most characteristic features was his speed and ability to gain a yard on his defender from static positions - does he still have that?
