what sets Mourinho aside from the rest

Is when it comes to football he doesn't do sentiment, in fact he is arguably the most ruthless man in sport.

It says it all when we spent years trying to evolve from the core Jose built first time round and it took his return for us to finally replace the players he built.

He will do whatever it takes to make the team successful, he will happily sign players he didn't have great history with prior (ala Cesc and Eto'o) wwhile dropping player's who have previously given great success to him, ala Cech.

He can see the obvious. Amazing how many managers just miss basic things.

I think this is a very good point

I'm not trying to derogate or oversimplify what Mourinho does - there are obviously a number of qualities a great manager must have - but one of the keys to his success, as Obers says, it that he can see what does/doesn't work and isn't afraid to make the changes necessary to make the system work.

As an Arsenal fan, I have huge respect for what Wenger has done, but in recent years, we've been paying one of the biggest salaries in football to someone who seemingly doesn't see things that are obvious to pretty much every Arsenal fan.
Take Ozil, for example: the creative midfield area was probably the one position that didn't need strengthening, yet he blew pretty much our entire budget on a player that wasn't necessary, leaving a number of gaping holes in other areas of the squad.
And since we already have so many attacking midfielders, Ozil has spent a large part of his Arsenal career being shoehorned into positions that don't suit him, simply to fit him into the team, which has, in turn, damaged the form of Ozil and the team as a whole.
When we signed him, questions were asked as to how Ozil would fit into the team, and Wenger said something along the lines of 'You make a player of Ozil's quality fit'.

And this is what separates Mourinho: he has a system in mind and won't make compromises for players that don't fit the mould.

Before Mourinho arrived at Chelsea, Mata was arguably the first name on the teamsheet. But Mourinho didn't see a place for him in his system, and didn't think twice about sacrificing him for the sake of the team - the same thing happened with players like Kaka and Casillas at Madrid. As the OP says, he will do anything to make the team successful, and now he's reaping the rewards.

Very true. It's incredible how he can distance himself from his emotional attachments when it's in the best interests of his job (or the future). That's a gift

There's so many things that set him apart from the rest. Obers' point is most definitely one of them. During the 90 and early 00s, Ferguson didn't burden himself with 5 year plans, signing young prospects, etc... he knew how he wanted to play, bought the best in the division which fit his mould and enjoyed the inevitable success that came from it. In a landscape where managers (understandably) overcomplicated their jobs due to the pressure on them to do well, someone with Mourinho's conviction to his philosophies is always going to stand out.

I could post an essay on this but everything about why he's successful ties into the fact he's one of the lucky ones in this world who knows who he is and what he's about. He'd have achieved greatness in whatever field of work he went into.

This is exactly what England need right now whilst this next generation is coming through. Pick a system, a system that can adapt, and players that work in it, and stick with those players for the next 10 years, only allowing players coming in that can adapt to the way England plays. Germany did this starting from 2006.

The best manager for England would have been Mourinho, however now it seems like whatever manager England have, they are too weak and it seems like the media pressure gets to them when it comes to picking the team.

Mourinho will probably manage England one day. Be a crying shame if that job gets away from him before he retires, too many appealing elements to it for all parties involved.

Very much a testament to how irrelevant the English national team is in 2014, baring the emergence of a young English managerial prodigy in the 15 years, Mourinho would be the most patriotic appointment the F.A could make. He's someone almost nobody would have a problem with representing England. How funny (or sad) is that?

He'd install a sense of English pride (won't see the Fab's/Costa's dropping out of his squads) that's been long forgotten about. Again, so sad
