Champions league qualification 2015/16

Can we just clear this up because it still seems like there's a lot of confusion on these boards regarding this topic.

"◾The previous limit of a maximum of four teams per association will be increased to five, meaning that if the Champions League title holders or the Europa League title holders (but not both) are from the top three ranked associations and finish outside the top four of their domestic league, the fourth-placed team of their association will not be prevented from participating in the tournament."

That is all, Arsenal fans can sleep easy.

Damnit I had massive dreams of winning the Europa and United finishing fourth. You've killed my dreams.

As if Liverpool will win the Europa anyway

I assume that means the Europa League holders wouldn't qualify for CL if the other 5 spots are already taken?

For that to happen, wouldn't you need the CL winners to finish outside the top 4 domestically? It's happened a couple of times before, but the chances of both the EL and CL winners coming from the same league AND both of them finishing uotside the top 4 seem very remote.

That's how I read it. And that's entirely fair imo. I don't think a Europa League winner deserves CL qualification if they don't finisg top 4. Simply because it invites teams to rest players in league games. Nobody wants a repeat of the 2007 CL final where two teams got there by crapping all over their own leagues. And all steps need to be taken to prevent a repeat

And I'm aware that my logic basically renders winning the Europa meaningless in terms of CL qualification. But I don't think it should ever come down to it.

No. Europa League winners and Champions league winners qualify for the Champiosn league.

If both of those winners are from England, and both finish outside the top 4, then the top 3 qualify for champiosn league, those two winners also qualify, and the team 4th in the league goes into the Europa.

Thanks for clarifying 'MFB'. Now that the Europa League winners qualify for CL, that should give it a bit more clout. I still think a few things need re-jigging, but firstly, no more dropping of CL 3rd placed teams into Europa League - you've had your chance and tough!!

Yes that's right acually. But very very wrong in principle imo because I maintain that any team winning those competitions and finishing outside the top 4 will have almost invariably given away league games. Chelsea did the same in 2012 so not just a dig at Liverpool

the tournament is indeed a bit of a mess. Its not just the 3rd place teams dropping in there, but there are also (I think) the champiosn league 3rd qualifying round defeated teams that get in too, such as Celtic this year. Its a mess until the last 16 and then it gets interesting.

In theory an FA Cup runner up or LC winner could end up in the CL.

Ridiculous.
