Half-term review

As we are nearly halfway through the season, it seems an apt time to have a half-term review. Off the back of a fine week (we haven’t won three games in a row on too many occasions this year), I’m sure most of us are feeling in a more upbeat mood going into what will be a testing festive period.

Another up and down season (would we expect anything less?), we’ve experienced the good, the mediocre and, at times, the downright ugly.

In the last few weeks, however, our fortunes have changed somewhat, with more positive results and the feeling that Poch is finally starting to implement his philosophy. He’s slowly weeded out the players who either aren’t good enough or don’t seem to give a damn, has followed on from Sherwood’s mantra of giving youth a chance and has got us playing with an impressive resilience and determination away from home.

Our form at the Lane has been suspect to say the least. We’ve had shocking results against West Brom, Newcastle and Stoke as well as a meek surrender to a Liverpool team who, as we’ve seen since, are really nothing special. A few decent wins against Soton, QPR and Everton, but we really need to find a way of looking more convincing when playing at home against teams below us in the league. In this respect, the win over Burnley was a step in the right direction.

We all knew this season would be another one of transition. At times I’ve questioned whether Poch was the right man, usually after one of our dismal home defeats, but I’m becoming more and more convinced that he’s a good manager who will get us moving forwards if given enough time. He’s shown he’s willing to adapt and change things up when needed and I like how seriously he takes his job – similar to AVB in that respect. He also doesn’t carry out any embarrassing antics or mouth off as a few of our recent managers have.

And if you’d told me we’d be level on points with Arsenal, four points off 4th and into the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup (with a tie against a League One side) by Christmas, I think I’d have taken that. That’s not to say our season so far has been perfect, far from it. But it’s not been completely dismal either.

Anyway, here we go:

Player of the season (so far)?

Best win of the season (so far)?

Most dismal defeat (so far)?

Moment of the season (so far)?

Flop of the season (so far)? – could be a few contenders here

I'm delighted with the last week's results, but drill down and it's not as impressive as it appears.

Burnley
Didn't see it but a narrow win, from what I hear a bit nervy.

Newcastle
Superb

Swansea
Very fortunate to come away with a point, let alone 3.

I'll take wins of course, but a lot of work still to be done, cespecially when you bear in mind the previous three results v Beskitas, Chelsea and Palace.

On another note, being level with Arsenal, and above Liverpool and Everton, puts us in a good position but it has not been a vintage season so far for any of us.

Even if we beat Leicester and United, which would be great, it'd only put us on 33pts for 19 games.

That's 66pts over a full season, which shows how poor the returns have been for the CL chasers as 70 is about the average over the last 4/5 years for top 4, more in the last couple

For me...

Player of the season (so far)? Lloris

Best win of the season (so far)? QPR Home (just the look on Harrys face really)

Most dismal defeat (so far)? WBA at home. Shocking.

Moment of the season (so far) Rabona was fun but Dier scoring the winner at Wet Spam is mine.

Flop of the season (so far)? Adebayor. Sick of the underperforming ponce.

I'd like to think that, for Spurs at least, the second half of the season will not be reflective of the first half.

New manager, unsure of his team, which now seems to be emerging, more confidence creeping into the more settled team.

But other factors also play their part. Liverpool, on a poor run of form without the strike force they had last year. Our worst game at home, the 0-3 Liverpool game included Sturridge.

Guess what game he might make his comeback in!!!!
