I am wholly behind the root and branch destruction of the rotten eggs at FIFA which should have been done by UEFA and pressure from the sponsors.
My worry is that it is the Americans who are driving change.
The 2018 World Cup is going to Russia,we all know by rights it should have been in England. Another country who missed out on the 2018 world cup was the USA, they couldn’t even get their confederation CONCACAF to fully support them. Russia beat the USA and this smarts.
The Americans have been known to start wars so that their private companies can make a profit, so imagine their disgruntlement at not getting another world cup where there major global companies could make money, think how Nike could replace Addidas and Chevrolet replace Kia, let’s not mention Gazprom.
In England we see more and more Americans getting involved in football, they are trying extremely hard to make the MLS a success over there, they see the that football is by far the biggest global sport with a huge market potential, it is also a sport they have little influence in. So how do they build influence?
First, with the help of their local guy Chuck Blazer, they are able to attack and dismantle CONCACAF. What are the odds that the USA becomes the major force within CONCACAF after the dust settles on this debacle. Once they have a confederation in their back pocket, the backing of a host of extremely wealthy global American based companies offering an increase in sponsorship, they will be able to take on the leadership role of FIFA.
Ladies and gentleman soon there will be no FIFA there will be International Soccer Federation Inc.
The world of Soccer is not so far away

Blatter seems to think as usual that this will go away if he stands firm. I think for once that wont be happening this time

Either Blatter knows what's happening on his watch, in which case he is corrupt, or he doesn't, in which case he is incompetent, either way he should go

Think also the UEFA response is interesting, maybe a power play to become the predominant governing body. Most club power and top players are in UEFA, a European championship with a few guest teams from the other Confederations would be as big as the World Cup anyway.

When Blatter goes there will be a power vacuum, the Americans know this and are getting themselves in position to take control, their corruption will not be as obvious as it is now, it will be there, as it is in all these powerful organisations. My worry is for the traditions of the game should the Americans hold the power.
This why I agree with you Wicklow, the UEFA response will be interesting.

Blatter will never go unless he is voted out. That is for certain. He is causing untold damage to the Swiss nation.

With everyone (BBC included), commenting that Blatter is still very likely to win the presidential election on Friday, even after his breathtaking (for him) speech this afternoon, ..................what's to stop someone torching the FIFA building with all the corrupt bästards locked inside it when they hold the vote?

Could be the best result for football is he wins, and UEFA break away. Risk is that it ends up like boxing with multiple governing bodies but the real power will be in Europe where the most money and influence is
