They've done some despicable things but toppling FIFA was praiseworthy. Of course all of these sponsors and folks (including ManU's David Gill) are now "courageous" for deploring FIFA's corruption

Isn't the IRS how they convicted Al Capone?

They will certainly threaten any and all American banks and businesses involved with the RICO act as it's deliberately broad and can include and multiple organized criminal activities. The bribing within FIFA is about as 'organized' as it gets. Multiple transactions means multiple acts. Harming US WC bids would be the effective crime against the US. There's your RICO. Some office bod in the US isn't going to take the heavy jail time that comes with that act, not to save some FIFA bod. The rats will start piling off the ship soon enough.

I think the simplest explanation is that they're going after a big, high publicity scalp. No conspiracy, just people with jobs and a broad remit saw an opportunity to make a name for themselves (and probably get promoted or 'famous' within their profession) so they took it.
Like they do with wall street tycoons, and drug dealers and assorted other big scalps.

Ah bless! How many bankers in Goldman Sachs, Lehman Bros, etc have gone to jail?
You guys keep applying your wishful thinking, the FBI have no jurisdiction over FIFA.
-----------------
Very few as they generally give up the person they've made the money for
As I said, nobody of note will go to jail, just the Chilean and the Ghanaian in the "Patsy Parade." We won't be seeing Blatter paraded in cuffs or anything like that. Mainly because he'll have the goods on too many people in positions of authority worldwide.
That list of his shady dealings will have country presidents on it so he'll never see prosecution. It won't be enough to keep him the head of the major governing body of football. The stink is out and what what's been whispered and hinted at for years is now being publicly stated as fact. FIFA is crooked and it's official. Heads have to roll for the organisation to survive and the Qatar bid has set UEFA on a one track course of getting rid of his. Commercially, no UEFA is no World Cup worth watching. So win or lose in todays election, it's irrelevant, Blatter is gone and it is just a question of whether he goes quietly or kicking and screaming.

FIFA could all hide in the Ecuadorian embassy for a few years

You better believe some lower ranking members have already got flights. Is there an Ecuadorian Embassy in Zurich?
