Backwards compatibility

So my 2nd placed announcement of E3 after the release date of Fallout 4, and certainly the best piece of hardware news coming out from either camp.

BUT, having sat down and thought about it........is it really all that?

So what are the pros? Well according to M$ every week they will make 100s of new (old) games backwards compatible and if you stick in the disc it will download the digital format, and the digital purchases it will download from your profile automatically so XBLA games like meatboy etc will be there for you to play in glorious Xboneiness!

However, in retro spec i see a couple of things here. First was the backwards compatibility of the 360 which was ok, but had big gaps in the library and certain games wouldnt work - will we see a similar thing here?

Secondly, why would you even bother selling your 360? It is still a solid console with plenty of versatility with kinect (there are a few fun games there), and the apps that now work for free like Netflix making it a great back up console to have on another TV and nowadays has a retail value of about 50p.

And finally Head of Xbox Phil Spencer when asked what do EA and other big third parties think about this said something along the lines of "Well we havent quite got the rights to make these games backwards compatible just yet, but all M$ and XBLA games will be!"

So yes it is a great feature, but in reality it is 2 years too late in my books - and apart from people who have very little space and/or large XBLA library's i cant see this making people choose Xbone over PS4.

Also what games would you play on your backwards compatible Xbone?

The idea of Red Dead is amazing............but will Rockstar allow that, as this looks like a perfect cash grab to me, and I would buy a remastered Red Dead GOTY ed.

What do you guys think? Hype job or system seller?

I will admit for now after looking at it and seeing some interviews I need to see it to believe it and i dont mean 50 XBLA games I want to see your Mass Effects, RDRs etc!

When I want to play PS3 I use my PS3. Stupid selling it when you get barely anything for it and then complain you can't play PS3 games

Backwards compatability on the face of it sounds a big announcement and is something gamers always claim to be top of their list, the reality is gamers moving onto next gen are looking for next gen experiences and backward compatibility is more for nostalgia purposes than any real gaming necessity,
My old PS3 had backwards compatibility which was nice but barely used.

Having said that if I was MS this sort of thing would make sense, they needed a big announcement for E3 which on the face of it it was, but in reality this was more about trying to keep the Xone relevant to 360 owners, who have been leaving the xbox in favour of the PS4, this announcement was more important to MS from a business perspective than any real advantage to gamers.

They won't make games which are available for both 360 and XBOne backwards compatible. For example, Skyrim.

Yeah i agree with most the backwards compatible thing isnt a huge thing for me .... still got the 360 and loadsa games and you will be limited to finding a game that you already have that Msoft will also allow ...If you have the old games chances are you still have the old console .. And is PS not bringing out Playstation Now with the old games on it.

And @ RobertUSA yup the next gens suck so much that you wanna turn your Ps3 into one ...... hmmmmm. Next gen games are really starting to come into their own now but that was always gonna be the case once they stopped doing titles for both old and next gen consoles. So you could say that its the old consoles and fans that are holding the next gen consoles back

I got rid of my 360 so I was very happy with the announcement - simply a space issue in that I don't want three consoles by my TV. I haven't enjoyed a single game on the one or ps4 as much as a few 360 titles so I would play them again now - the new gen consoles have been gathering dust for me in all honesty.

It's only a good thing really. Not an unbelievable thing, but a good one.

did u keep you 360 games and just sell the console ?? If you sold the games then you will need to buy them again i assume

PS im right there with you on the red dead fromt I personally thuoght it was better than GTA. Much stronger story and the world was more immersive i thought

Just the console, a friend of mines had packed up so I gave it to him but he already had all the same games I did anyway. They've been sat in a box waiting to go!

Completely agree with the red dead comments.

To be honest I'm worried this is only really gonna work for XBLA games, I really dont see EA or Rocksteady agreeing to this............

Will be happy to be proven wrong but all previous attempts at backwards compatibility have been half assed and at the moment i see this as the same
