DERBY COUNTY FA CUP Winners

I remember when Derby won the FA Cup, right back in the old days it was before time actually existed.

Oh hang on a minute.................................

Actually I don't remember. If only there was someone out there who does and could describe the atmosphere around the place during the build up and the euphoria after we won it!

I can't be doing with that Wallace Simson.

But I like Grommit and Homer.

Such a pity, me bedridden here with chronic loss of irony, or I could have contributed. It's no fun being old. Did I tell you I was ninety two? Did you bring any Kendal Mint Cake? I can't be doing with that Wallace Simson.

The whole idea of this thread was to hear your story CAT.

The semi final was at Hillsborough - Manchester United were the opposition. Jack Taylor was the referee.

David Nish collected the ball, ran it past 3 or 4 challenges and smashed it into the net to equalise. No-one else touched the ball. Magnificent goal.

Except Jack Taylor pulled it up for offside by another Derby player who was never involved. There always seems to be big help available when they need it. Look at last week.

Didn't you know equalisers don't count against Man Utd TR

I remember Kevin Keegan being on Football Focus on the Saturday of all the cup matches in 76 (all on Saturday then!) 'predicting' the results. He went against Derby in every round, including against Liverpool if I recall. The only time he picked Derby was the semi final
I seem to remember he used this same uncanny sixth sense for predicting the wrong result when asked by Brian Moore during commentary, if Batty would score his penalty in the 98 WC against Argentina, he said he would, and of course we were instantly doomed!

I'd love, just love it, if he ever got a prediction right. He couldn't even pick a safe place to park his car.

Just imagine us winning the FA cup, getting promoted and waving to the deluded Newcastle fans as we exchange places in May!

But I'm not being greedy!

Nish in fact chipped it over the onrushing Man United defence who had left Derby players in offside positions. Stepney knew the flag had gone up so he didn't try to do anything. I think Nish just tapped it into the net rather than smashed it. We don't know whether he would actually have scored or not as the whistle had already gone. Offside rules were different then and a bit more subjective about so-called "interfering with play". I thought it was a bad decision although it was common back then to interpret the rule in the way Jack Taylor did.

It was and is the most disappointing day I have ever had as a Derby fan as I was telling my kids last night, more than Juventus, Leicester or QPR. We had seemed destined to win the Cup and with Charlie George's injury it just seemed so unfair. I was in the upper tier of the Leppings Lane end and we had to run the gauntlet of jubilant Man U fans as we shared the same exit. I also remember the thousands of cars of Derby fans with their scarves out of their windows on the way home despite the loss. Little did we know that was the beginning of the end of our period of success.

I was about 11 yrs old, making an airfix model of a sea king helicopter, listening to RD, when we lost that match, absolutely ingrained in the memory as one of my worst moments as a Derby fan. We had been touted as potential double winners going into the match against a newly (I think) promoted ManU, alas I think that marked the start of our decline from being a top club. At least Southampton did them in the final!

I've never seen us get past the 6th round. I have seen us get promoted to the so called promised land a few times. That's why I would take an FA cup final before promotion. Pity the club find the cup an hinderance and aren't bothered about getting further than the 4th round and that's come from somebody at the club. Will we take the FA cup seriously if we get to the prem? Not a chance staying up is more important to the club.
