GW 9 - Results

Portsmouth 1 – 0 Tottenham Hotspur
Lewandoswki (Payet)

The home side controlled the match, but found it near impossible to create any meaningful chances against a solid Spurs side. The away team’s compact setup worked well to contain Pompey, and they broke well down the wings to create chances but couldn’t find their way to a goal. The home side looked the more likely to get the win, and it was Payet that proved to be the difference, as he seemed to be the creative spark Pompey were relying on at times, he did brilliantly to setup the goal and from there the home side held on to get the win.

Aston Villa 3-2 Birmingham
Higuain (KDB), Xhaka, Reus (KDB); Vardy (Depay), Vardy (Moutinho)

Attack came out on top on this game. KDB the catalyst behind the Villa goals as he did well to find space in important positions when breaking to get at the Brum defence. At the other end, the pace of Brum’s forwards caused Villa no end of problems. Brum in the end were unlucky to lose this one. Villa’s choice of counter attacking football at home in this derby they wanted to win didn’t make the fans happy but it did allow them to get at Brum really well when the away team committed men forward to attack.

Man City 0 – 1 Newcastle
Suarez (Fabregas)

The away team dominated the ball, but City’s setup made them difficult to breakthrough. With the home team’s wingers dropping so deep to defend, it made it difficult for them to build attacks and play out as Toon were able to press the options ahead of them well. With a solid back four, and great cover from the midfield Newcastle didn’t create much. Cesc came on though and split the home team’s defence with a cheeky lob that Suarez slotted away to give the away team the win.

Hull 1 – 1 Arsenal
Vietto (Schopf) ; Ronaldo
Red card Geis

Hull’s defensive structure proved stable in this game, and gave them the platform to really take the game to Arsenal’s star players. With a greater level of direction, the home teams tactics came out on top overall, although Arsenal had enough of a game plan to make it a tight match. Hull were unfortunate to have Geis sent off for a second booking late in the game as the quality of Arsenal’s attackers forced him to foul them to stop them on occasion. After this, the home side did well to hold on.

Chelsea 2-1 Stoke
Neymar (Ricardo), Aguero (Dybala); Benzema (Ribery)

Stoke’s main two attacking threats linked up for their goal, but the Chelsea subs gave the home team the win. Dybala creating Aguero’s only real chance of the game which he stuck away brilliantly.
