New points system for 6N

Different points system for 2017 championship.

If I'm right, and I've read it briefly, it's the same as the World Cup? Four points for a win, bonus point for four or more tries.

Also, a team who wins the Grand Slam gets an additional three points. Personally I don't see the benefit in that.

Thoughts?

I suppose the bonus three points is in case the team that wins the grand slam wasn't picking up the individual bonus points.

That's exactly what it's for. Heard an interview with some 6N guy today who said they checked back all the 6N results and there was one Grand Slam team who wouldn't have won without it.

Not sure if I agree with that. If the objective is to increase the number of tries scored, this allows a side to be boring and not worry as long as they are winning. It rewards winning all games 6-3 as opposed to being enterprising and risk losing one game 39-31. OK, that's a bit extreme, but you get the point.

the grand slam 3 point bit has been added as cover because they know with how tight a lot of 6 nations game can be, a team winning 5 games and not getting a bonus point in any game in theory can still lose the 6 nations if another team wins 4 games and gets bonus points in all of those games, silly really

Fair point, didn't think they'd make it possible to win the Slam but not the 6N.
