Football punditry - Does it need to change?

Well every day I read the back pages this week the big story seems to be about the Neville brothers, Carragher and Karius etc etc

And it has got me thinking about the role of punditry and if it needs to change?

My personal view is that most pundits are rubbish, but I am a fan of Gary Neville, Glen Hoddle and the odd other one or two pundits.

But many of these these pundits, Gary Neville included do seem to dig out players a lot and perhaps they need to lighten up a little in this regard.

These pundits have a platform on TV and in the general media that the players they are dissing don't have. And, it seems if players do try and fight back via social media etc they then get further vilified.

At times it does feel a bit like bullying, especially if it becomes a campaign against particular individual players. I don't think the pundits of today were under the same level of scrutiny and criticism on TV or in the media when they were playing for their respective clubs.

It is a tricky issue to be honest, but perhaps the singling out of an individual player can be toned down a bit, or certainly it should when it starts to take the shape of a campaign against an individual.

It needs a complete clear out of pundits barring a select handful that actually do a good and unbiased job.

While the media companies continue to appoint their pundits simply because they are former players of their favourite clubs, then it will always remain in the gutter.

I'm not being funny, but if I am watching a game on the box I do not need to hear the inane drivel of a failed coach telling me what went wrong when they have presided over much worse themselves.

I turn them off, and tune back in for the game.

Give me Wrighty all day long on MotD. He may lack the finesse of others but he wears what he feels on his sleeve

I can't stand David Pleat either.

OP you are one of the few that actually understands this issue and why Klopp hit back.

Punditry has its platforms like MOtD, articles etc. However, twitter is not a platform for punditry and the moment Neville opens that door then it's open season on him as well.

Neville should have said his piece and taken Karius' response on the chin and left it at that. Until that point it was all normal stuff but when a pundit wants to start a twitter back and forth with your floundering goalkeeper you can't allow that to happen.

The moment Karius starts tweeting back he has lost. Well and truly WUMmed.

It is not as if a goalkeeper has not got stick before. Gomes. The Italian at United (forget his name). Bravo. James. Fabianski. Szcezcny.

If he has a good spell now nobody will remember it. If he has another bad game though the media will be all over him. He has only put pressure on himself. Neville never plays again

I'm sorry, I didn't know Karius had tweeted back. Got a link?

Massimo Taibi.

Played until he was about 40 in Italy if I remember rightly.

I notice that most people posting against Karius don't have even basic knowledge of the events.

Amazing really.

Completely forgot his name. Who did he have an absolute mare against? Saints? 3-3?

I think he had a mare in 3 of the 4 or so games he played.

Was MOTM in his first game v Liverpool! Was to blame for a goal though.

Let 3 in v Saints, with that 40 yard nutmeg goal.

Conceded 5 v Chelsea. Was at fault for more than 1 and not less than 5.

Can't remember the other opponents (Wimbledon perhaps?). Not sure how many he conceded in that game, but it was definitely down to him.
