Death of the petrol car

Ok, Ok, nothing to do with the PS4, I know, I know. Just seeing peoples thoughts and perception of the electric car.

I will be looking to change my car in the next year or so and have been looking into whats available, one of the stand out cars is a Tesla model s, offering supercar performance for a fraction of the price, unfortunately my budget is not that high, but it did get me looking more into electric.

The Nissan Leaf is the other end of the scale, it offers a lot for a small car, but I want something with a little more wow, looking into it more I began to realise just how big the electric car market will be, with every car manufacturer now bringing out their own electric vehicle, with electric cars set to outsell petrol/diesal in the next 5 to ten years.

Electric cars have a lot of advantages over petrol, better for the enviroment, maintenance, cost per mile, instant torque, charging at home convenience.

Just wondering peoples thoughts of electrics cars.

Volkswagon ID coming in 2020, with 400 to 600 kilometre range, if they can pull it off, why would you want petrol?

Just seen the old link no longer works, try this one, to see why electric is the way forward.

Dude if you insist on jumping in on electric, with the lack of actual data I would buy new. That warranty is gonna be your best friend if *touch wood* anything happens.

To be fair electric is well understood and with so few moving parts already reliable, it's basically a computer on wheels.

I'll check out what's on offer, if I can figure out a deal that makes sense, I might bite, but I was originally going to wait till the end of the year, my wife is the one keen to do a deal now.

Which is ironic as she was originally sceptical about electric.

No its not my friend. It's a new emerging technology with little to no data to back up anything. Most surveys being a few thousand cars. There will be failures and problems, and the fact it is new means it will be expensive to fix with again a few garages outside the dealers being able to do the work. Remember car warranties only apply to the 1st driver.

However, I don't think you need to worry about the leafs battery problem

Simon, the principles behind an electric car have been known and understood for over a hundred years and cant be more simple, the biggest thing holding them back was battery life.

A normal car has 1800 moving parts (dont quote me) the electric car has 17 (5 of which are wheels) maintenance is pretty much non existent, no fluids, no filters, it's only major part is the battery, which is why I'm keen on waiting for the newer one.

If there is a problem I probably will need to take it to Nissan, but there is very little to go wrong.

I do accept this is still early days and electric will only improve, but the biggest thing will be range and battery life, with electric so simple reliability is pretty much guaranteed,

Oh I might add self driving cars really are not that far away, electric making the process a lot more straight forward.

Sure Samsung said that at the start of 2016

Nothing is a given.

I agree on batteries Simon (although no electric car has exploded), as I said the batteries and range are the only major improvements that can be made, the rest will just become more refined.

Oh well couldn't make a deal on a Leaf, I quite like the look of the Ioniq, so will check that out, If not will stick to the original plan and look at the end of the year.

My wife will get over it..... eventually.

Don't worry, I'm sure you can buy her a smaller, cheaper electronic gadget to satisfy her.
