AFCON - What does it mean ?

A
Facking
Cornucopia
Of
Non-football

Just watched some highlights out of curiosity. As usual pub team defending and pub team goalkeeping. Some very talented players on show but even with the advent of European coaches (not good ones, mind you) the overall standard doesn't seem to be improving much.

Did you watch Euro 16?
Pub team keepers? Fack me, even the supposed top class keepers like de Gea, Neuer and Hart were throwing them in. Pub team keepers would be embarrassed by the Iceland goal Hart pushed in.
Pub team defending? The Belgium defenders are still going the wrong way from Robson-Kanus turn. Yeap, Hal Robson Kanu.

The "advent" of European coaches? Not sure what this means, European coaches have been in charge of African teams for decades.

Mate - If think the standard of football at AFCON is decent then you clearly are watching the wrong football tem in England.

Well I did watch Spurs v Man City the other day. Haven't seen an AFCON keeper perform anywhere near as bad as Lloris.

Would have to agree on that Not sure I would say man City's football was on a par with AFCON's Dog & Duck third XI football

If you expect teams like Senegal to be on a level with top football teams then I suggest you are approaching this wrong

LUBO
No I don't expect that at all. Just pointing out that (IMHO) it isn't worth watching due to that poor standard you mention.
If some posters get excited by it then so be it. It's all about opinions.
Ang thank you for AN INTELLIGENT AND SENSIBLE post, no name-calling, no pathetic attempt at points scoring. It's this site is supposed to be about but sadly I often get dragged to the usual schoolboy level.

I think it's only to be expected for African football to be slightly inferior. Their leagues are underfunded and they rely on foreign teams to bring through their best players, in the most. It is getting better though.

It's not as if Euro 16 or the Copa America were full of top quality. In comparison to the "elite" confederation tournaments then AFCON hasn't been significantly inferior. And surely they would be the measuring stick.

Even if you want to take domestic football, where teams are assembled for massive amounts of money, you only have to watch a game last night to see a keeper attempt to punch a shot away only to see it loop behind the keeper and towards the goal. An England international keeper as well... At the same time Egypts 3rd choice was putting in a solid display to keep his countries third clean sheet in 3. The Ghanaian keeper was helpless in conceding his first goal of the tournament in the same game from a very good free kick.
There was only one keeper in those two games who looked like he would be better off in a pub side, and it wasn't the African ones.

AFCON standard is dropping fast. Watched it last season and it was dreadful. Ghana, Ivory Coast and Algeria used to be half decent. That Ghana side in the WC were brilliant

After watching a number of games of the dourfest that was the Euros, I don't think there's much of a difference. Intl football as a whole is pathetic nowadays

My point exactly I knew if I waited long enough

Couple of problems with that statement.

One, there wasn't a competition last season - maybe that is why it was dreadful.
Secondly, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire and Algeria are half decent. But so are the likes of Burkina-Faso, Congo DR and Egypt.
