Under 23's

Just watching the highlights of last nights match between our U23's away at Derby. Fooook me what a dearth of talent we have at that age group!!! they being ripped a new one here and there seems to be a real lack of heart amongst them!! On the positive side though, watched the 18's against Wolves on Saturday and there is some real talent in that side!!

Yeah Goss went to QPR.

Didn't we have similar issues a few years ago with the majority of the under 21 squad being gutted after winning the title?

Tuanzebe looks a real prospect, and Mitchell definitely has talent but I'm struggling to see a future at United for many of the others. The 18' on the other hand....

Yeah Mourinho won't be here by the time the under 18's are ready so they're the best bet.

Rosso - has Goss left for QPR?? I wasn't sure if that transfer went through or not?......... I just cant fathom how a club as large as United have ended up with no striker at that level...... and surely they should have looked to resolve the issue in January?!

Fack, I'd completely missed the Goss transfer

Hope we've put a buy-back clause in the deal; he's a classy footballer. (There's no way we've put a buy-back clause in the deal.)

I don't know how we even started the season without a striker! Demi Mitchell played up top for the U18s on occasion, but he's not a bona fide centre forward, in any traditional sense of the term. McTominay has been tried there, but his size, strength and aerial ability aside, he's not a natural CF either.

It's quite baffling really. Maybe Jose had planned to send Rashford back down

Riley looks a real prospect to me. Given Shaw and Darmian's continuing failures to impress, maybe he and/or CBJ will get a chance in the summer.

I'd be excited to see Pereira given a chance on the left as well.

Doubt any of these players will get much of a look in.

If they impress enough, they'll get a chance.

Do you genuinely believe that? Mourinho isn't going to put his faith in any of those players. He's in no position to do so.

I think a lot depends on how this season finishes. If we get top four and then make a strong start to next season in the PL, then I do genuinely expect he'll bring the youngsters in for a lot of the cups.

He's played the young players no one thought would get a single minute this season and he's been much more attacking than most said.

Results haven't been near as good as we all want, but most of the stereotypes people have of him haven't come to fruition. I think he's been told what we want to see from a United team and he's likely been given some assurances regarding getting another season regardless of top four. I know this is just my opinion and I could be way off the mark, but the idea of a longer term legacy is basically the only thing left in management for him to achieve. United has the board to give him the space he wants plus I think they want another long term appointment. Notes got a six year deal straight up but failed, lvg said from day one he was going to retire so cutting the boredom short one season sucked especially after the FA cup but is understandable. As long as Jose doesn't urinate off the entire squad and supporters, he'll be OK.

Playing the youngsters in the manner of LVG isn't sustainable. Yes he said he deliberately had a small squad to foster reliance on playing youngsters but with the injuries we had he lost all control in how they were deployed. It was completely haphazard, and at times forced, regardless of readiness.

SAF, gradually introduced youngsters into the squad and then 11. Done on the back of strong results and a generally balanced squad. This didn't always work such as pogba, but best model by far for me. Jose will be following this method I'm sure.

Current squad delivers this season then I won't be the least bit surprised to see more minutes for any youngsters deserving of a game.

Sorry this post has gone on way too long but one more example. Klopp, smallish squad, claims the moral highground by playing youngsters in the cups and league through January and they've fallen to pieces. Now even the first 11 looks disjointed compared to how brilliantly they performed over the first half a season.

A lot (or any) success in this day is highly unlikely with small squads and lots of youngsters. We need to think about the priorities of the Club. I hate to be a Lawrenson, but I can't see a class of '92 any time soon by any club in any decent league in Europe these days.

By the way, thanks Jos and Rosso for the 23s and 18s updates.

Have hopes for Pereira but do struggle to see him breaking through. LF seems to be where he has most chance but going to be tough. Young will likely be off in the summer so would be a good squad member. One way to get him in is playing him as a LWB style against a lot of the lower teams at home. We dominate possession but still having trouble scoring goals so play a dynamic attack minded player back there who is more than capable playing forward. I know this won't happen but just throwing out ideas to solve the goal scoring issue.
