Matteo Darmian

What are people's thoughts on him?

Now 6 months ago I would have got rid of him. Thought he was utter garbage and whenever I saw him coming in I used to despair.

However since his horror show against Spurs where Sissoko was tearing him a new one in the second half I think he has performed very well and has been mr consistent. Jose seems to also trust him playing him in many if the big games recently.
Yes he is awful going forward but he is very good defensively, his positional sense is excellent and bar Valencia he is the best player we have one on one.
For me I'd keep him not as a first team player but as a squad player going into next season.

The thing with having too many squad quality players is that we are also to blame for not really being able to develop a few of these into better quality. I think you could look at plenty of clubs and earlier felt certain players where only 'squad level' quality but the difference being they've developed and improved over time. Hardly anyone has actually improved since joining us in recent years and that's a worry.

Looking at who we've bought this decade it's actually depressing seeing how few have actually improved since being here.

Improved

De Gea
Mike (although he's still frustrating)
Martial (again not clear)
*Hernandez

About the same

Herrera
Rojo
Mata
Blind (possibly declined seeing as he was the POTY when we bought him)

Declined

Shaw
Darmian
Fellaini
Jones
Young
*Morgan
*Depay
*Di Maria
*Falcao
*Kagawa
*Zaha

Defensively I think Darmian is probably our best full back. I don't see why people are questioning his defensive game - rarely puts a foot wrong.

That is completely off set by how bad he is going forward though. Absolutely horrendous.

He's absolutely appalling on the ball - to the point where I've no idea how he's plying his trade at this level.

Defensively he's fairly steady, and he's deceptively fast.

Him and Luke Shaw must be competing to see who can perform the worst once they reach the halfway line.

He's good enough if we are aiming for a mid to upper table finish each season. Which is the kind of club we are fast becoming.

Not since Ronalso was here where you could confidently predict the majority of the starting XI. Of course SAF sometimes played Park, Fletcher etc in some games but you could take an educated guess in which games he would.

Spot on. Nowadays we seem to have about 3 or 4 first team players and the rest are "rotatable".
