The end of the world as we know it

Lots of ideas being put forward to change the nature of a football match completely.

Have to say a number of the ideas do seem positive, but its potentially quite a radical change.

With modern technology I think linking the ref's timepiece with a stadium clock etc wouldn't be hard to achieve.

Not sure about the Americanisation of the game that's being proposed. Ra-ra girls may be okay in netball, but i don't want to see our game cheapened by such gimmicks.

Some interesting proposals here. The clock stopping thing opens up the old debate about grass roots and non league having the same access to technology as the pro game. Also if it is genuinely the case that we losing 15 minutes plus per half for stoppages, why are refs not being encouraged to add this on now? When something similar was introduced in Rugby Union they didnt reduce the length of the half, it remained at 40 mins.

I wouldnt be averse to a reduction but 15 mins seems excessive.

Not sure about the missed penalty thing, but the free kick change would help speed up the game. Not sure how this would apply to goal kicks, would the rule about the ball having to leave the penalty before being touched also change?

what i'd like to see is the scrapping of two yellows, or any number, equals a red.
many yellows are for such trivial offences that a sending off can be a far bigger crime against the game than the offences themselves
i remember don goodman when playing against us being sent off for standing too close to a freekick taker and then too close to a throw-in taker.
ridiculous to put a team down to 10 men for that

Totally agree Wolfgang. These are precisely the kind of offences which could be dealt with by a short spell in the sin bin rather than issuing a yellow card at all.

One rule which is unnecessary is the player leaving the pitch for a substitution having to go by the shortest route to the touchline. If the ref is going to stop the watch for subs anyway the player can take as long as he likes 'cause he won't be wasting anyone's time but his own.

With regard to the proposal that games are reduced to 30 minutes with the clock stopped when the ball goes out of play, is still being discussed. With regard to the top 5 leagues in Europe, game in play time has been measured as an average of;
Serie A 57mins
Premier League 56mins
Ligue 1 56mins
Bundesliga 56mins
La Liga 54mins

So a move to the proposed 60 minutes would actually increase game time
