Value

In a world where Gylfi Sigurdsson is valued at £50m

How on earth do we find value when replacing Chalobah Zouma RLC and Chalobah in our squad

Lets have it right, we have sold or loaned our bench, our entire bench from last season

Begovic
Ake
Chalobah
RLC
Zouma
&
Costa and Matic going out as well.

That's an entire bench

We have signed 2 players and a backup keeper

And we still are without a top level striker,

Where is the value in the market at the moment that will allow us to replace adequately these excellent young products who we never gave a chance?

The answer is nowhere, £10m players are now going for £30 - £40m so we will be replacing ( if we replace ) with overpriced average squad players. It makes no sense at all to me and you have to wonder what is going on behind the scenes which has allowed us to get to the point where we are a week away from pre season with 15 recognised first team players one of which ( hazard ) is out until September

I think you have to take into account what a player wants as well. Some want to leave..... because they're on the bench.

extraordinary deals this summer: Romelu Lukaku for £75m, Alexandre Lacazette for £53m, Mohamed Salah for £37m, Jordan Pickford for £30m. It’s usually a cheap dig at football to point out how many hospitals or schools could be funded for a player’s weekly wage but, really, how are historians of the future going to explain a society that has dragged itself on under austerity for seven years and yet smiles benignly at a decent right-back going for £50m?

as far as i'm aware the taxpayer didn't fund any of those transfers.

and i make the same point every time, that in terms of the wages being earned by players they are comparable to other top sportsmen/artists, yet i never see anyone on the music threads refusing to buy a beatles album because they are all billionaires, or anyone on the film threads saying they refused to watch the last mission impossible film because tom cruise makes $30m a movie.

It wasn't my point, copy and paste from the guardian don. But I agree with it.

tbf top sportsmen in this country have only just caught up with overall trends in earnings globally, but it does confuse me that sterling will get crucified for being worth £20-30m, but no one thinks it is a disgrace/absurd/shocking that adele is worth £50m.

and it's almost certainly only going to get worse (or more extreme, depending on your viewpoint).

Agreed, but it surely cannot keep going as is, not sustainable. Interesting that it's piracy that may be one of the factors that resolute the ludicrous broadcast deals, as more and more turn off sky for illegal streaming.
