LA Galaxy Game Brief Review

So I just watched the game and here are my quick thoughts:

1st half was a 3511 with Rashford as a lone striker and Mata behind, second half was a 41212 diamond with Martial and Lukaku up top.

We could've scored 5/6 in each half, but defensively we were better in the first half.

New signings:

Lukaku - touch looked heavy, hold up play was pretty poor and I'm fairly certain he conceded possession the most times out of our players. Missed one golden chance. However, it was his first game so give the guy a chance.

Lindelof - looked composed, good on the ball, one surge through the heart of their midfield...basically as advertised. However, he was probably at fault for both of their goals so I still don't think he's a nailed on starter come August.

Overall, good work out, but LA Galaxy were shockingly bad. It was like they were trying to give us the ball in dangerous areas. Special mention to Perreira who played the Carrick role in the second half and looked very good. Don't think he gave the ball away once.

It was 3 at the back...

Jones, smalling, blind

Valencia at lwb and jesse at rwb.

This is how we lined up.

Go see the game again if you must... or go online and read some analysis of the game as you don't appear to know what you're watching...

We did play three at the back first half as well as the 2nd.

Lingard and Valencia were usually positioned quite high on the flanks and Jones, Smalling and Blind's average positions were quite central making up a tight back three when we were defending and once we had possession Jones and Blind spread out to offer better passing options.

José explained to MUTV he'd be using a back three in both halves and that's what he did. He was hardly going to give one set of players time to get more used to playing in a back three and not the other.

Even the commentators were analysing the back three in the first half.

Anyway, enjoyed the game, especially some of the interplay between the midfield and attack which was precise and positive.

Rashford got off to a flyer. He looked bigger, more muscular and surprisingly sharp. Pity that he didn't grab his hattrick.

Enjoyed Pereira dictating things in the 2nd half. Always making himself available for a pass, clever in eluding his marker and always looking to be incisive and play forward which he did. Dangerous from set plays too.

Defence was a bit of a concern 2nd half. We had a bigger team playing but we struggled to defend set pieces and in general play. The midfield didn't offer enough protection to the defence. It isn't hard to see why José wants a defensive midfielder above any other type of midfielder.

Lingard wasnt a wing back. He didn't even go in our half.

He was off the left shoulder of Rashford for most of his time.

I think what has confused you is that Valencia had no one to mark and stayed out wide a lot.

TRS

Joes gave a much different explanation on the ESPN U pre match.

He said to the very attracive blonde that he would change his starting 11 in the second half and go to a back three as well.

If you watched Jones and Mike they were rarely apart in the centre. Jones only ventured to the right side when Valencia attacked.

When LA rarely attacked Tony V dropped back into his normal position.

In the second half as a back three they got behind us way too much imo which I think Jose was very concerned about.

Not digging Memphis.

Just staggered you think Lingard was playing wing back.

I did watch. Smalling was quite clearly the most central of the three and Jones and Blind were playing like right and left centre-halves when we were defending. The back three shuffled across depending what side LA Galaxy were attacking down. When we had the ball, Jones and Blind went wider to offer a passing option for Smalling.

352 was played in both halves, only difference was in execution

-the question for me is did we play better in the first half because we had better players or because la galaxy had poorer players. The obvious answer is la had poorer players in the 1st half.

I was going to type more about my observations but at this point it is pointless imo
