Big Jock

He passed away 32 years ago today - I am sure we all remember where we were when we heard the news. I was living in Oswestry (not far from the Welsh border, coincidentally) and had just calmed down from the excitement of our late equaliser when the "News at Ten" headlines boomed out the devastating news

Did any posters on here actually attend the match itself? What are your memories of that awful night?

Here are some Fergie memories of the great man

When he led out a Scottish side - you knew they were going to play their erses off.

Loved Souness at Rangers as a player manager, and being able to sing😇, Souness, Souness😁.Turned us around and gave us great memories.

If you can, check out RTE fitba coverage where Souness, Eamon Dumphy and J Giles do a Motd style show.

Some funny patter and rows.

Stevie

On the Op.

I only have a few memories of Mr Stein, and he came over as a father figure, and wise old guy, similar to Shankly and Bob Paisley, IMO.

One of those men you really try your heart out for on the pitch, and who just lives fitba.

RIP Jock Stein

Watched the game with my old Granny, she was Celtic daft, always sat with her big teddy (jock) that I bought her,she was gutted at the news the night he passed. We both watched his funeral from the streets (croftfoot roundabout) as it headed to the Linn crematorium along with thousands of others paying their last respects to Big Jock.

Great OP STB.

I remember watching the game. We didn't look like we were going to score, it was a frustrating game from memory. Did Leighton not get substituted at half time and it later emerged he had lost a contact lense?

I also remember the pictures of Jock being carried into the tunnel, and then the news coming out he had taken ill and ultimately of his passing.

The debate about who is Scotland's greatest manager ever can be debated by many, but I think he was our country's first true great manager, and a pioneer for everyone that followed.

Well remembered, Pov - Allan Rough came on in his place

Guys - just returned from watching Dave Stewart and Friends at the Sunderland Empire (fantastic concert, by the way) and was so pleased to see all the great comments and observations made by so many posters. Thanks guys It is obvious the respect in which Jock is still held by all the posters on here, even those who were too young or not even born when he passed. That in itself is a fantastic legacy from the great man
