When I first started to watch

Tottenham, they were a mediocre cup team, not having won the FA Cup for near on 40 years, over the next decade or so the became one, if not the best cups in the country, winning FA Cups, European Trophies, League Cups. They would get to semi-finals and win them, then would get to Cup Finals and win them. They were simply a very formidable cup winning club, with the mentality to get over the line. Indeed they had played nine Finals in a row, with just the one loss, before they lost to Liverpool in the 1982 League Cup Final. They won seven FA Cup semi-finals in a row, and if they got to the latter stages of cup competitions they were almost certainly guaranteed silverware.

Fast forward a generation, and the club is now overseeing certainly the worse period in the history of the club in Cup competitions. Nearly 30 years without winning the FA Cup. Seven successive Cup Semi-Final losses in a row, a record, constantly losing at home in cup competitions against inferior opposition. Where is the fight and the pride at this club, in their great cup heritage.

Poch seems unable to motive the team for cup competitions, like he can for the Prem. He has a truly awful record in all forms of cup competitions since he has been at Spurs, and yes I know the League Cup and FA Cup have become basically reserve team competitions until the latter stages these days, but other teams seem to cruise through their matches with their Youth teams. Spurs put out a strong team last night, and for some reason, mental or whatever, never seem to get over the line in cup competitions now.

The last few seasons the home defeats have been laughable. Losing at home to Bayer Leverkusen and Monaco in the CL last season, in the FA Cup over the past few years, losing at home to Leicester and Palace, in the League Cup losing at home to Arsenal and now West Ham. The list of defeats at home is becoming endless. Back in the day if Spurs were drawn at home in the cup, it was more or less a gimmee.

Why is it that a manager who has such great credentials with his Prem form over the last two or three seasons, is completely unable to get whatever team he picks, up for cup competitions?

I really did think that Spurs were building a great squad, that were capable of competing on more than one front, but once again as soon as the first XI is weakened in any way, the team just lose. After a brilliant week, the feeling of euphoria has all but vanished in a trace.

The thing is how does Poch get this squad, competing in Domestic, European and Prem competitions all at the same time, like other managers manage too?

Winning becomes a habit, even winning the League Cup can help build that mentality in the squad.

Well said kneerash. I cannot accept some of our supporters think yesterday was just a blip. It happens every season. And then they say ah but we have bigger fish to fry, as if going to any of United, Liverpool, Chelsea or Arsenal over the past 30 or 40 years has yield lots of win, I doubt Spurs have won more than half a dozen of 120 away games at those clubs the past 30 years. Again it is pretty shocking record.

A great week, should have been followed up with a routine cup win, that is what all good clubs do.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nope, all good clubs lose from time to time. Chelsea lost to this lot in the same round last season. We've been to more finals of this competition than Chelsea have, since we last won it.

However the manner of the loss is the worst aspect of this.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Of course all clubs lose, I am not bemoaning that, Chelsea may have also lost to West Ham, but they have a winning mentality in general, Spurs don`t, they have won about a dozen trophies, since Spurs last won a trophy, big, big difference. I am sure their supporters can put up with the odd loss, if they are still hoovering up trophies.

Chelsea lost to West Ham and went on to win the league, if Spurs do the same then I will hold up my hand.

inishing top 4 on the regular in the most competitive league in the world can not be classed as mediocre either.

Nothing like Arsenal and you know it. Spurs have only just started to establish themselves as a top four team in a league that is much more competitive now. Difference is we've got a forward looking manager and a chairman that's got his clubs best interests at heart. Nice try though. Although I would agree that some of our supporters are morphing into Arsenal fans. It would make good TV.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Everything you just said could apply to us 10 yrs ago, it's not a bad thing, we've done ok.
And i don't think getting top 4 for 2 yrs in a row is 'established' yet either.

Difference being that Chelsea have always had the resources to achieve that success and we in comparison don't. Yet even with that they don't win everything. No team can compete on every single front.

And there's nothing wrong with our winning mentality. We've won more than enough games in the past year to suggest it. We now have to see how we respond for the rest of the season. We're doing well in the league and the CL, and are in the middle of some tough fixtures. There's no point getting too pisssed off at this lost chance when there's so much of the season left to play. If at the end of the season we haven't achieved anything, you can look back at this with more scrutiny.

I get your points, but after a great week, cruising along at 2-0 up with a little over 35 minutes left in the game, I think some of us are entitled to be very aggrieved that they somehow contrived to blow it, even if some are not.

Of course. I was greatly annoyed by it too, and still am. Just that while we're doing well on other fronts, and are still fairly early into the season, I guess you can't let it get to you too much without knowing what's left to come.

When Kane or Alli end up leaving, and you see them holding an FA or League cup, have a look at their faces and see if they look like they don't care.

Aye or celebrating top 4 in the Arsenal changing rooms with selfies galore.

Ok, fair point....but if the players care so much, why do they let a 2 goal lead slip so meekly, or lose at home to palace etc??
