Marcus Edwards

Haven’t seen this anywhere so thought I’d post:

“Marcus Edwards, the Tottenham Hotspur youngster compared to Lionel Messi by manager Mauricio Pochettino, is in line for a lecture on his time-keeping and general attitude after his loan spell at Norwich City was cut short.

The 19-year-old returned to Spurs this week, having played only six minutes for Championship club Norwich after joining on loan in January.

Edwards was meant to stay with the Canaries until the end of the season, but both clubs confirmed that he had returned to Tottenham due to ‘personal reasons’.

Telegraph Sport understands a number of issues contributed to Edwards’ disappointing spell at Norwich, including his poor time-keeping.

It is believed he failed to arrive on time for a single training session and was also late for team meetings, much to the bewilderment of Norwich’s senior professionals.

His attitude and failure to engage with the rest of Norwich’s squad surprised the other players, although sources at Tottenham point out that Edwards has an introverted personality that can be misunderstood....."

——————————

Now we’ve got no idea what these ‘personal issues’ are so we don’t know if he’s got issues with family or if this is just some diplomatic wording to keep the peace, but it’s disappointing to hear that his timekeeping was terrible.

This was a good opportunity for him to get out and play some games at a competitive level and help him mature as a man and as a player, but he’s not come close to grasping it. Norwich had no obligation to play him, but how has he only managed 6 minutes of play?

Talent without the necessary attitude won’t always get you very far, and this isn’t the first time I’ve heard or read this called into question.

Am I expecting too much from him or is punctuality and application the least to be expected from a player?

Thoughts?

Sounds like he's blowing it.

Kid is clearly a special class of idiot. World at his feet and he actively chooses to p!ss it up the wall instead. No way he'll ever make it anywhere near the top if he's still not figured out you don't get anywhere without hard work.

Tbf I doubt he is as good as people made out, just that he plays aesthetically pleasing Football when on the ball

No he really is a exceptional young talent. Just doesn’t seem to have ghe drive and determination to go with it

There is no point being talked about like having Messi potential if you have a poor attitude. You'll get no further in football than Joey Barton, at best, and at worst you won't even see the PL.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

With all due respect, he only has to take a look at Scott Parker, and now Ryan Mason who’s working at the club and beginning his coaching badges to see former players who weren’t exactly gifted, but they had the mindset and desire to make the most of their ability.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Mason was actually the Edwards of his day - he was smashing it at youth level as a 10. Lots of hype around him around 2008 or so

Parker was too to be fair, he was on the McDs ad when he was a kid and getting hype early doors.

He and Mason really had to work hard to become successful though, as young talent does not automatically equate to regular top-level football. Only the most exceptional of players can have a bad attitude and still produce the goods

Ok maybe not lacking talent as such, just not the most expansive of passers and not technically gifted. More renowned for their graft and desire in their PL careers.

I’ve never seen Edwards play, but a lack of drive in himself will lead him to be Adel Taraabt or someone like that. Even at the age of 19, he should be looking at what some other players were doing at 19 and ask himself what he wants to be. Doesn’t even have to look too far back in the distance either:

Rooney
Messi
Aguero
Neymar
Sterling
Alli

Regulars for their club and also full internationals before they turned 20.

I am unsure why Parker ever got any hype - he was a dreadful footballer, technically.
