Everyone else is giving their two cents on this, so I thought I would chip in.

I think that this is absolutely the right type of move for Rangers. I have been advocating this type of move for years.

At Rangers current level and finances they cannot appoint someone at the current standing of Brendan (for example), no chance of that level of appointment in Scotland without CL Football.

So you either get:

1. a guy who has proven to be an average manger
2. a big name on his way down
3. a new guy on his way up

They can only potentially overhaul Celtic by swinging for the fences, and that means getting a guy on his way up. This is what they have done. Any manager with more experience would naturally be a guy with flaws, no guy with flaws could possibly overhaul Celtic within 3 years.

This is the right move.

Also, the last few Rangers mangers were bullied out by the dressing room. That will not happen when the manager is someone who was 5 times the player of the best guy in the dressing room.

I'm not saying that Gerard will be a good manager, no one can know that. But what I am saying is that anyone with a real CV who is willing to go to Rangers right now would be too flawed to stop 10 in a row. Rangers need a Hail Mary pass (worst metaphor for Rangers, ever) and that is what they have thrown here.
