A quiet place

Just seen it and quite enjoyed it tbh, however it was pretty brain dead and stupid imo.

7/10 (slightly generous, but the acting and premise save regular bad plot holes)

Anyone else care to voice their own opinion?

1man - I'd like to know why you found it brain dead. If anything it's well thought out.

You disagree about Hereditary?

Very much so. One of the very best horror films ever IMO. Seen it a few times already. Although the crowd plays a role in peoples enjoymen I've found.

Also to call a film contrived is laughable and pointless. ALL films have so much work done down to the finest details. Which film would you think isn't?

One of the first opening shots is a pan across a bedroom, which was clearly done by hand as the speed change is total amateur hour. The introduction to the epi pen drama was absurd in the extreme, where it was something out of a high school production where they clumsily introduce her allergy then contrive to use it to full effect in the next scene by through some escape of rational behavior a mother sends his son to a frat party with his little sister who has developmental delays. Or the throwaway "my mother used to make floor mats just like that" .....OMG would you believe that it turns out later on that....

It was poor.

****POSSIBLE SPOILERZ****

First, I'm not going to debate the speed of panning ffs. The timing throughout was pitch/tone perfect.

The introduction to the epi pen was fine and was obviously done efficiently. If you want a more subtly then maybe horror isn't your thing? I also think youre missing the point that EVERYTHING WAS LAID OUT AND IN PLACE from them the start. This film is essentially the last moments of a ritual taking place. All events were already set in motion and at times the players were unaware of the movements they were making.

Was not a frat party but a high school party. Not so extreme bro.

If the doormats were a problem for you I don't know what to tell you. That's so inconsequential and only a tiny clue into the invasion taking place. She's in shock/mourning/lost at the time. She wasn't on some investigation to solve the minor details.

This film is a full on assault. Capable of leaving the viewers traumatized.

Horror is my favourite genre. Will watch pretty much every new movie. Something like Under the Shadow is far superior and how a horror should be done.

You see, that's where I have a problem. "how horror should be done"...if horror IS your favourite genre then you know damn well horror can and should be all over the spectrum. Cheesy fun horror has just as much place as moody, subtle, terror-filled horror. I wouldn't say there is any formula for horror. As long as you enjoy/feel/think/laugh during horror then it's done it's job.

Im perfectly ok with you not liking Hereditary but it is FAR from poor/dreadful.

On a separate note, Under the Shadow is decent enough but not nearly the epitome of horror. Had some pretty cheap jump scares and a couple of ineffective "monsters" imo.

Wow. I respect your appreciation of dreadful horror films. Its good as it gives you a much broader body of work to enjoy.

I too thought Hereditary was poor, and at times laughably poor.
