Our World Cup conundrum

With both England and Belgium both being in the World Cup semi-finals, there’s a fair chance that some of our players will become World Cup winners in a weeks time which for me is quite a pleasing thought. I know there’s no sort of clout or badge of honour for it, but I like the sound of it all the same. I haven’t forgotten Lloris is in the mix as well.

However the conundrum for me is; how this is going to affect our preparation for the new season? I’ve made it quite clear on numerous occasions that my loyalties lie with club rather than country so I’d have preferred our players to have played well but been knocked out a week or so ago.

None of the 9 players we’ve got left at the World Cup will be going on holidays until mid-July, so whilst they won’t lose too much fitness in that time, we need to ensure they get enough rest before the new season. This means they probably won’t be back in training with us until 5/6 August?

This is far from ideal for us

I iamgine they will be given a couple of weeks off, from the final weekend (Sunday 15th) and return to training on Monday 30th.

Lots of players will be in this boat, lots at the World Cup and only been let go a week or two earlier.

They will not need a gruelling pre season as they have not had a sustained period off

I hope you are right, knowing our luck Kane will get injured whilst lifting the world cup

I think Spurs really get on a bigger map with a England WC victory. Pride can be useful and with as many Spurs players playing well for country, I think the overall effect will be extremely positive. These boys are already better players than they were before the cup.

With the players left in the World Cup taken out.

Vorm
Aurier Sanchez Foyth Davies
Waynama Onomah
Moura Eriksen Lamela
Llorente

That’s probably our strongest line up with people who will be available ( assuming we don’t buy anyone )

If you're going to include Eriksen and Sanchez then you might as well include Son.

Yea as others have said he’s at the Asia games. He is possibly missing in jan too for the Asia cup.

Facked. Even more frustrating how we haven't got signings in early for preseason

Sure we'll get going again for top 4 challengers next season but a slow start looks certain again

It will definitely give our lads greater exposure to high pressure games. If we make the final then our lads shouldn't feel the pressure in any other club game again as it gets no bigger than the World Cup final.

Trippier must be flying at the moment, he could go back to pre season and kock slap Poch telling him that he is first team permanently now, none of this bs rotation with Aurier

Agreed. There’s only 5 weeks left of the transfer window, and we’re not exactly swift to conclude negotiations.

Why can't you just identify a CM and tricky forward of quality as priority to sign and go for it from the off. Strange

Spurs have the highest number of players left in the competition with 9, but closely followed by United, Chelsea and City with 7 each.

In the short term our players might be a little jaded mentally as well as physically. However, don’t underestimate the long term benefit of playing so many high pressured games. They’ve all been playing fantastically well too, and Spurs will be much more match sharp than most other clubs.

If anyone truly believed Spurs are a mentally weak team full of bottlers this World Cup has proved them very wrong. Winning matches is never a negative!

So sick and tired of the misuse of the phrase ‘bottlers’ on this site.
