Stanislav Lobotka

Who? Well that was my first thought when seeing us linked with him this morning

Here’s a good write up with videos to get to know him a little.

Silly season? Cheap knockoff version of kovacic? What’s your verdict?

Round £40m

Yes, I thought so. Now, that's not cheap.
So, maybe we can get someone good as a Kane backup.
And a Wanyama/Dembele replacement as well.

I would also like to see us dump Aurier and get a really decent Walker replacement.

Read the write-up, sounds ok. If he’s not someone to dictate the tempo then he’s not what I want.

Never heard of him. If it’s true that we want him, he’d be another one added to the list of players that we want that nobody else does. Does that not tell the club something?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Have any of Poch’s signings been anyone who other teams desperately wanted? Son, Trippier, Dele, Davies all come to mind.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yep, none off our signings have been wanted by top teams bar maybe Sanchez links with Barca
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I’m being serious though, the more and more I think about our scouting and transfer strategy (yeah I probably think about it too much), the more suspect it seems:

- We rarely/never hear of bids being rejected.
We’re always “working hard to improve the squad”, so while I can believe that we don’t leak news of bids, are we saying that the selling club never leak it either?
Or do we only bid for players from clubs where they are renowned for their secrecy and discreet dealings?
Do we actually make bids at all?

- Our targets.
How often are we linked with players who are of interest of other clubs?
Do we shy away from all potential bidding wars?
Do we think it’s 1998 where you can find some complete unknown in Ligue 2 or whatever like Wenger did with Vieira and Anelka?
Do we actually scout thoroughly and identify the players that take the interest of our European peers?

Factoring all of that in, it just seems that we possibly have so many self-imposed restrictions that it’s virtually impossible to sign anyone of note, unless it’s handed to us on a plate.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Don’t think it should be a criticism that we don’t buy any superstars, or players we’ve priced out other clubs for. How many clubs would buy our the players we have now for premium prices? How much will Dele go for now compared to how much we payed? That goes for Son, Eriksen, Jan, and Toby too. We haven’t got to where we are by spending £50+ on superstars. I don’t see Spurs changing that model anytime soon.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sane wasn’t a superstar
Mane wasn’t a superstar
Pjanic wasn’t a superstar

None of them cost much more than what Sissoko cost us (Pjanic was even less than that), but we aren’t even seemingly interested in this level of player, players who also didn’t earn massive wages at the time of signing. Besides I never said anything about superstars, there are levels between the likes of Neymar and N’koudou.

I know he's at United and seen as a lot higher in price but I would give Martial the same sort of star quality, if not more, as those guys, and someone that we seem to have had an interest in. Not that it's any consolation seeing as we won't get him. Still, nice to know we thought about raising our usual level of ambition in a transfer window.

Sane wasn’t a superstar neither was Mane but where our club is at the moment we’re not going to start bidding wars with City and Liverpool. Why are you getting upset with us signing players that no one else wants? That doesn’t equate to success at all. We’ve signed players that Poch has been able to get the best out of, and since he’s taken over I’d say we’ve improved quite considerably. Sorry just think it’s a stupid point to make, most of the players Poch has bought we could easily make triple/quadruple the money we got them for.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Everyone makes mistakes in the transfer market obviously, but it was pretty clear to me - and to many I suspect - that the likes of N’jie, N’koudou, Janssen, Sissoko and Llorente weren’t worth buying. That’s about £90m in fees and maybe 200-250k a week in wages shelled out between them. My point is that we’d be better off aiming for a higher calibre of player or at least one with very high potential, if it costs a bit more, then sometimes that’s the price you have to pay. Other clubs probably didn’t want them for a reason; that reason being they didn’t see sufficient quality or potential in them.

posted on 7/8/18

So what reasons was it for other clubs not wanting Dele, Eriksen, Trippier, Vertonghen, Dier? Etc.

posted on 7/8/18

Other clubs were linked and interested in Dele, Eriksen and Vertonghen, clubs such as Liverpool, Inter, Roma and Dortmund if I recall correctly.

Can’t remember re Dier, Trippier is pretty average anyway.

My point being is that if we keep up our recent habit of buying squad players with no quality or lacking in high potential we’ll just keep on going round in circles with the same 16 players we can rely on whilst selling the squad filler who can’t cut it, and replacing them with more squad players who can’t cut it...

posted on 7/8/18

Think there’s a difference between buying players from under clubs noses, and genuinely out-bidding teams. But Levy has never been about buying players on a premium, we got priced out of Zaha very quickly.

posted on 7/8/18

He’s quick to charge a premium though. That’s the market, a market he’s complicit in inflating. He can’t have it both ways.
