Traveling in Asia

Gents,

I'm due to be traveling to Bangkok in October, initially I was going in November with a couple of others who have been before but I've had to change my dates so will be going solo. The flights are already paid for (ยฃ550) so it would be a shame to not go as hotels, food, taxis etc are all very cheap from what I've researched.

My plan is over 2 weeks to visit Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and possibly Malaysia. Now I've travelled a bit by myself before in Europe (Germany, Poland, Holland, Greece) with zero issues but never to this extent so I'm a bit anxious about how easy it is to get around - specifically from landing in Bangkok to getting into the city itself and whichever hotel I end up booking.

Has anyone been over that way before that can offer any advice to someone going by themselves? There's a lot I want to see but currently my mood is switching between excitement and dread which I think is more down to the distance than anything.

Cheers

It's been a few years now since I was in Bangkok but I think you'll be fine. My girlfriend is going over there in October as well, traveling alone and going to meet a friend in Hua Hin. She's planning to get around by taxi.

Like DJ I can recommend the Dusit Thani, although it's about 15 or 16 years since I was there !!!

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll see what rooms are on offer near NANA as pitbk suggested and I know you can get overnight buses for dirt cheap which may come in handy. My manager also went to Vietnam last year said it was great.

Looking on various websites many say that Angkor Wat in Cambodia requires at least 3 days to experience it so will have to take that into consideration as want to see quite a few of the different temples.

Angkor Wat is fabulous, and is so complex there's a theory that it must have been built by aliens. You can enjoy it in a day, and you have to get there early - to see the sunrise. in Siem Reap, enjoy "Pub Street". Hotels are cheap, and superb - like boutique establishments. Cambodia is one of my favourite countries, and I found it very moving entering the the first time, remembering all that happened years ago with Pol Pot. There are so many people around who have lost limbs from landmines. The people are lovely.

Thanks for the heads up on this peeps, a country I’ve always wanted to visit along with Vietnam, the history and hardships they went through has always fascinated me but the way they’ve both come out of it has only intrigued me more, my missus is French and there is I believe a big influence food wise over there.

Yep - baguettes, cheese, coffee shops. If you go to Saigon make sure you go to the Independence Palace and do a tour of the war rooms etc. Fascinating experience.

Hi chaps, quick update on my travels

Completed 5 days in Bangkok which I really enjoyed strolling around some temples and a safari park amongst other things. I was surprised at how quickly I got to know a reasonable sized chunk around where I was staying. The food was good and found a couple of cool little bars with some decent live rock bands so every night I was a happy chappy as not into clubs blaring out awful tunes full of mongs jumping all over each other (of which there were plenty). I most likely enjoyed it more than I would have as on day 3 got chatting to a Colombian at said live music bar who sorted me out for a couple of days before she flew home and myself onto Saigon. It was still a massive heart in mouth moment on the first night though when we got back to my hotel and I was terrified when I took off her shorts that a big ol' pair of Geoffrey's were going to fall out but fortunately all was as it should be

I arrived in Saigon yesterday afternoon so today is my first proper day. I've walked a fair bit yesterday and a lot today as well as going along the main bar street last night. After 24 hours or so my impressions are that I don't like the place at all. Bangkok traffic was busy but this is just ridiculous, hundreds of thousands of scooters/motorbikes it's like wacky races on acid especially as the pavement constantly gets used as an extra lane...even aside from that just walking round there doesnt seem to be a great deal to do. There's the odd monument and a mini Notre Dame (which is off limits) but so far I havent found something that I can really walk around and take in. Perhaps it's a case of having to go further afield by taxi which in Bangkok I would happily have done but here the taxi driver on the way to the hotel from the airport tried to charge me double due to the traffic (traffic in Saigon who would have thought...) anyway that slightly soured the experience, I had one meal last night on bar street which gave me the squits this morning so currently sat in a McDonalds Cafe due to a sudden downpour typing out this waffle and hoping I can make it back to my hotel without diagracing myself.

Oh yeah, Bar Street in Saigon seems to be all loud club music and prossies and tramps absolutely everywhere.

I think also that in Bangkok I never really felt in danger of being mugged for my phone/wallet or ripped off for food, beer or taxi rides. In Saigon I feel the opposite and I wouldn't trust any of the feckers. Everything feels more chaotic but here until Monday morning when I go to Cambodia so will see what the weekend brings.

Just think of the funny story Saigon will be when you're out of it

Thank heavens for that public toilet on the way back to the hotel, never experienced bad guts like it. Thankful I chose the beef and not the chicken as could have been a lot worse.

Lying on my bed now trying not to make any sudden movements and drinking bottles of water.
