So there was a tweet the other day with a video of Berbatov’s famous assist for Ronaldo at West Ham from a fan page calling Berbatov a wizard.
I tweeted on the post that while he had great ability he was not a very good signing and I received quite a bit of backlash for the comment saying I don’t watch football and that he was great.
What do you guys think? Was he a great signing or a great player?
Here’s my take.
The guy had amazing skill and ability and had amazing moments (that assist, hatrick vs Liverpool, 5 vs Blackburn) but he was just too languid to be a truly great player and was the wrong signing at the time also.
We had just won the CL and arguably had the best attack in Europe. Rooney and Tevez were real hard workers with great ability and Ronaldo who would do anything to score goals even if his on pitch work rate didn’t match the other two. Then you have this languid, laid back CF come in and kind of upset the balance a bit.
He still had his moments obviously but in general was rarely trusted in or had an impact on the big games. It’s quite telling that out of the two CL finals we reached he was on the bench for one and left out of the squad totally behind a past it Michael Owen for the next one. Also telling he was ultimately 4th choice behind the likes of Welbeck and Chicha at the age of 30.
For me he was poor signing and ultimately a mistake.

I think Tevez while a great player is someone you don't want to keep at your club too long as he can be quite distributive, after a couple seasons he usually moves on or at least tries to make a move happen. The only club he cares for is Boca.

Berbatov had moments of magic where you said fair play that’s class.
I prefer the explosive style of a tevez or an Aguero though.

e still contributed significantly to us winning 2 titles (especially 10/11)

No he didnt, he had a few good games, overall he was the same poor player he was for us in his frst to seasons.
the myth he was this graceful footballer, he had a handful of these moments per season.
Also, Ferguson was having issues with Tevez which ultimately led to us getting Berbatov, so it wasn't really a case of had we not signed Berbatov then Tevez would have stayed and played well.

That and I think being born in a poor/rough area has a big impact on how you value money. I think non European players are easily mocked for going to places like China for big money but they've more than likely had to grow up in far tougher environments where money is hard to come by.

Bit late on my reply but I don't see how that makes him a 'poor' signing. Poor means you're not very good and do nothing to help the team. Like I said, he may not have taken us up a notch but he was still a joy to watch at times which is what many fans want from a player. He still contributed significantly to us winning 2 titles (especially 10/11), that isn't the definition of a 'poor' signing IMO.

I'm not sure I agree with that definition of a poor signing at all. For me it's someone who failed to live up to expectation, and Berba definitely did.
As for his contribution to our league titles - they weren't that significant and I'm fairly confident we would have won both without him. Even 10/11 which was his highest scoring season (21), the figures were skewed by a few games. I believe he got 5 at home against Blackburn - that's almost a quarter of his goals in one game. Again, aside from Liverpool he never really stepped up when we really needed him and was eventually dropped that season for Chicha.
The Tevez problems started after Berba signed. I'll acknowledge that Tevez is a volatile kind of character who is always likely kick up a fuss about something or another, but that still doesnt really justify the Berbatov signing. We could have replaced him with someone a lot more suited to us.
I appreciate that people may have loved watching him but it leads some fans to massively overstate his contribution. As I said, I have him up there as one of the worst signings Fergie ever made.
