So interesting quip from Keegan yesterday that his rant was entirely aimed at Ferguson.
After Fergie had remarked that teams would try harder against United than Newcastle Keegan felt “I was upset that he thought football wasn't a straight game."
"I will guarantee that it is the straightest game. What he said really had a go at football“
That’s a fair enough remark to make.....but, he then goes on to say
“ They had to go to Boro, managed by an ex-United player, and weren't going to lose there.“
He does realise he’s just insinuated that Ferguson was going to get a favor from Boro thus suggesting his whole point is invalid and the game isn’t straight.
Poor Kevin he’s never been right since that moment

Keegan’s rant costing Newcastle the title is one of those football myths that’s been allowed to fester, like Denis Law relegating United.
Newcastle got off to a great start then ran out of steam, like a lot of teams do, it was an inability to see out games against Liverpool (4-3) Blackburn (2-1) and Forest (1-1) which utmimately cost them. They were winning in at one point in all of those games.
The Fergie mind games thing is something the press liked to stoke up but I don’t think it has any affect on field, a bit annoying for opposition managers perhaps but in this case United had already clawed it back before Keegan’s outburst.
People saying Keegan wasn’t a good managerHe would be a God-send in today’s football. Got Newcastle promoted and finished third in his first PL season, had them challenging for the title and played some great football along the way, also got City promoted and stabilised them and was also praised for being a great man-manager. He was a very good coach

It's the same thing with Rafa's rant. We actually picked up more points per game after his rant if I remember correctly.

Technically yeah, but iirc you didn't win for the rest of the month after his rant and ultimately those points were the difference.

Don't think you can say it was purely down the rant though as draws were our big problem in general. Lost the title but by 4 points but had 12 draws

Not purely down to the rant, no. But it didn't help at all. And it certainly isn't a myth.
As Gary Nev said, it gave out players a bit of a lift, as evidenced by us winning our next nine games.

I meant I don't think you can say we drew our next couple of games because of the rant, as we had a problem with draws all season.

I believe that Liverpool actually accumulated more points per game after the rant than they did before it. Unfortunately for them we went on a run and they were unable to keep up.

45 points in 20 games before the rant, 41 in 18 after it.
We were 38 in 18 before the rant then 52 in 20 after it.

United did what they always used to do.
It had nothing to do with the rant but their fans like to make everything about United as poetic and legendary as possible and its not like Rafa didn't have a point, the Fergie years were hard on the rest of the league when it came to referees.
Glad we don't have to worry about United winning league titles anymore tbh.

You should worry about winning one yourself, Mamba, not us. What is this now, the 29th year since your last one.

Couldn't believe it at the time when Newcastle threw-away their 12 point lead.
Factors I believe led to the collapse:
1. Buying Asprilla in January. Good player, but it pushed Beardsley out of position, yet he'd been one of the best sources of creativity
2. Newcastle running out of steam: they were quick off the blocks but tired out
3. Ferguson had better mind-games than Keegan
4. Keegan is a very good motivator, but he wasn't the best tactically. When he returned to Newcastle years later the game had moved on, and players were surprised his pre-match tactics involved motivation rather than talking about strengths and weaknesses of the opposition etc.
4. Utd started playing better e.g., the 9 match winning streak.

In 1995/1996 season Newcastle despite having the 12 point lead did have a lot of tricky games in last 2-3 months. Man United home, then away games against Liverpool, Arsenal and Blackburn. They ended up losing all those games. If Newcastle beat Man United then things could have been different. They would have been 7 points clear with a game in hand, instead of being 1 point clear with a game in hand, that game was the massive turning point.
