A Question of Kante or Verratti?

I imagine this might seem like blasphemy, due to how cherished Kante is here, but I think it is an interesting idea to consider with the direction Sarri is taking us stylistically. It is also within sight of possibility, with PSG's interest in Kante, and both players approaching two-years left on their contract.

I'll start off by saying that I do believe Kante is more than capable of playing an attacking role in Sarri's system. I believe that his influence will continue to grow in this position as well. Although the basis of these thoughts are a reflection of how highly I view Kante as a footballer, rather than whether I think his talents are being misused in this role. Still, his attacking abilities have never been exercised in the first division, so it could be a case of untapped potential.

When a player's best role in the team is up for discussion, it usually serves as validation that they are not integral to the system, or that the manager hasn't found a system which suits them. Which is where we find Kante now. The shift to attacking football has meant that his quality and characteristics will be missed, but not needed if he is unable to play.

Paragraph linking point to Verratti and...

So the question I ask is, would the team benefit more from having Verratti, who would give us greater control in possession, or Kante, who gives us greater control without it?

Verratti is more like Jorginho, deep lying playmaker. He can't play box to box and hasn't got the legs like Kante.

I'd hate to see our midfield without Kante

Verratti has played quite regularly in a more advanced midfield position for PSG. Barca’s arrangement of Busquets, Xavi and Iniesta, shows you don’t have to have athelticism in midfield. It’s just whether it would translate to the English football as well.

Awesome player who I've wanted us to sign for years but Jorginho has made the prospect redundant, they couldn't play together.

Either Jorginho would be playmaking without advancing, butching his Regista qualities, or he'd have to play higher up with a holding player protecting both of them (which we wouldn't have if we sold Kante... except Bakayoko ) but neither of them are particularly good runners so we'd wind up turning into something resembling LVG's United - nothing but sideways passes.

We need an Allan. Someone who grafts like Kante but is more accomplished with the ball. Best PL example is Ander Herreira. He'd be a quality signing for us if United think about letting him go, and if I'm not mistaken his contracts up next year.

I’d rather shoot my mum than replace Kante with Herrera

Not replace, add to the squad. Kante still has a lot of value, but Herreira will give us something he couldn't.

If we were to replace Kante I'd like us to bring in a goal scoring/playmaker type midfielder.

Someone like Savic/Pogba/Eriksen/De Bruyne.........

I think Ramsey is heading to us btw.

Thoughts on playing Barkley and Kovacic at the same time?

Everything possible, but this would mean benching Kante. Personally, I would still stick with Kante, give him to get used to the new role,

Btw, I am a big fan of Verratti, when he's fully fit, he's a beast. Such a shame, that he's an injury prone these days.
