We actually played some excellent football in that period.
I recall us battering Leicester, West Ham, Feyenoord and Fenerbahce with some excellent attacking play. We also played a few other teams off the park but couldn’t finish.
That’s where the “Jose’s playing the way United should" song originated from.
It was really in the 2nd half of that season where some would say Jose reverted to type and since then the football has mainly been drab.
Jose’s first 6 months

You forget lvg made the team at the very least a good passing team. Maybe lackihg a cutting edge but they defended by holding on to the ball.

I find this to be a rather historical revisionist viewpoint.
I don't think we were a good passing team at all. High possession between our midfield, defence and DDG doesn't qualify as a good passing team in my opinion.
The players often looked terrified to even try to make a good incisive pass. We had about as much "cutting edge" on display as a beachball.
I do not like how we are playing under José, so this is not a defence of him, however I was bored watching LVG's United. Bored enough to often cure my insomnia. I stay up until 2-3 am or wake up around then most weekends for nine months of the year to watch us play, 4-5 am on CL/EL days mid-week. I've never fallen back asleep as many times as I did with LVG.
I don't enjoy what we're watching now, but at least I'm not bored.

I mentioned we didn't have cutting edge because we did not splunk as much to get players like Pogba and Ibrahimovic under LvG, but we did keep possession, something that if you didn't like LvG you had to agree to.
That is what I was saying. LvG with just a Pogba would be miles ahead of what Jose is serving up.
Also, you find this constant back to the wall football entertaining? Do you go watch relegation fodder football for "entertainment"? At the very least LvG had a plan. Jose has nothing! His tactical ingenuity is wingers drop back, Herrera man mark is a sprinkle of fellaini up top.
At least I could point to Rashford and Martial as a bright spot when LvG left, if Jose left now what is going to leave behind? Every single player is out of form, with their confidence absolutely shot. 2 out 3 years under his management we will end up languishing in midtable, 400 million later. If Jose had what LvG had, he would have struggled to escape relegation.

Exhibit A.
I said we lacked a cutting edge but at least we where a good passing team.
You where trying to paint what we are getting at the moment as something better when it really isn't. For the caliber of players, what we are getting is so mediocre.

Joseball has proved to be as equally boring as anything lvg served up

Difference is we had a class act up leading the line. Ibra was his best signing and was a fantastic forward spearheading the attack. Defenders were scared of him, he was quality with his touches and link up play and he actually put himself about (ran the channel closing down constantly).
Compare that to the oaf we have up front now. Who stands still, points all the time, has a worse touch than Usain Bolt and is a reactive footballer who just doesn't read the game. We have a lot of faults in this squad but Lukaku is the main reason why our 'style' is drab. Mourinho is at fault for not dropping him but he's probably hoping he gets better, but I haven't seen any improvement.

When you think of it, considering how much we spent under Mourinho and he had very little work to do as LVG had a good defence, young attackers in Rashford and Martial. Yes we should have kept Rafael and Nani (instead of getting Memphis) and maybe Hernandez but we still had Valencia.

I should say considering how much Man Utd spent under Mourinho, he should have very few excuses. Its pretty much his squad now but he is still being forced to use the better transfers or youth promotions under SAF, Moyes and LVG lol.
