That’s like saying Cryuff just kicked a ball around

Ledley is spot on.

Here's an art crtic'a analysis of why that Hockney painting is worth the money that was paid:

Too bad Hockney never painted football players on a pitch at a stadium like the old WHL, or did he?

There is absolutely no difference in the obscene amount of money people are willing to pay for a panting, when clubs like Man City are willing to splash out on obscene wages to acquire football players.

Football in its present state has no monopoly on spending obscene amounts of money, when half the world is starving.

Hockney paints for a living, he’s not responsible for what happens to his work when it’s sold.

If Cruyff was playing down the park, or at whatever level you wish to use, you would see he was a genius. There is no subjectivity

The difference here is you have been told Hockney is a genius by the art establishment. If you had never heard of him, you would not give his art a second look.

I quite like them myself, but in the cold light of day they are not anything a half decent artist could not muster up

Cryuff would just be another sportsman if you had absolutely no interest in football.

I like Hockney's work but he's not a 'genius' in my eyes, I can't really think of a living artist who is.

In my opinion.

Not true. My Missus has watched a CL game a few years back, said she enjoyed watching Barcelona, and pointed Messi out. It is obvious how good both were to someone with no interest in football.

If Hockney is not a genius, what is the problem? As I said, just another painting

I haven't got a problem with anything connected to the artist, the painting or the person that bought it.

I don't know where this painting will end up but the idea of private collections, never to be seen by the public is obscene.

My line of debate was in relation to this

I realise now it was private collections per se you didn't like, but ultimately it boils down to the same thing - works are generally painted to be sold, not altruistically

I agree with you totally, I just think hiding great works of art away in private galleries is morally wrong.
