Planning Ahead

The logic is to keep a manager in place until OGS was available to take the reigns until the end of the season, as opposed to hastily appointing a Hiddink, Ancelotti type or even a Hughes, Bruce, Pulis type.

Stability for the rest of the season and 7 months to find a manager who can leave their current club at the end of the season, when they will be more willing to move.

But appointing Hiddink would likely have worked better than appointing OGS. I don't see why you would wait to appoint someone off the virtue of being a club legend when there were better potential interim appointments available.

I'm sure it wasn't specifically about the Liverpool result, and I'd be surprised if it got down to a situation where it was make or break depending on that game. The DoF rumours have been swirling around for a while. So, yes, I think it's a fair assumption that this has been in the pipeline.

By the way, this is another example of football fans' tendency to read too much into past patterns. Quite a few people have been stating as fact the notion that Mourinho won't be sacked until he mathematically fails to qualify for the CL, because it's club policy, because it happened twice before. There's a whole lot of variables in football.

Based on form, I don't think anyone should be betting on Woodward's decision making here being wise and rigorous.

It would be nice to think that plenty of homework was done before selecting the interim manager (even if the interim idea is itself above all about buying time to do the homework to get the permanent appointment right). But I've consistently overestimated the club's professionalism since Fergie / Gill stepped down so I'll reserve judgement on this.

We planned ahead the last three times.

None of Moyes, LVG or Mourinho were appointed without due consideration.

Lack of planning isn't an issue. The ownership and executive management not having a facking clue what they are doing is.

I can't imagine sacking Jose hinged on when Ole would be available. I've no real issue with Ole in charge but it's not as if he was the outstanding candidate for the caretaker role.

I think this is far more to do with the relationship between Pogba and Mourinho collapsing.

Not entirely true, he just extended one that was already in place

We should see a noticeable improvement purely for the fact the players won't all hate OGS. Should be enough to see out the season and try and get some fun back in our play. Trophies aren't the objective now for 5 months. Planning for next permanent manager is and going back to playing attacking football.
