Not everyone, obviously.
But why are so many football fans incapable of behaving like decent human beings when watching or discussing the sport? There are a few things to note:
- The worst part of all... the games themselves.
Why is it that we need hundreds of police officers and crowds to be kept apart? Why can't people just sit and enjoy the game, regardless of who is next to them? Why do people meet for fights before a game?
- Treatment of players.
The anger and the abuse from fans around the side of the pitch towards opposition fans... what is that all about? Grown men absolutely seething with rage because of a football player.
- Forums etc.
Looking at the way some people speak to each other on here, sometimes I wonder if people genuinely hate one another. We've never met but because we support different teams we should abuse each other? Unbelievable.
It just doesn't happen with other sports. I enjoy watching most live sports and have spent a fair bit of time at cricket, tennis and rugby grounds - this nonsense doesn't go on.
So what is it about football that brings out this side of them?
Is it different people at each sport, or is it the same people but behaving differently?
I have a little boy on the way and it really has made me think. I absolutely love football, it's my big passion - both playing and watching. But do I want him going to games and listening to some of the abuse that goes on? I don't think I do.
Why are football fans such hateful louts?

No qualms in taking kids to the games. Took my daughter when she was 3, she went off it, but the lad is regular and abroad. He's only 12 but has been to more games than many on here.

So you are saying where a sport is popular you get more incidents? More people, more incidents. Surprising!

No, I'm asking why generally people behave worse at football than any other sport.
The fact that a few places in Wales buck the trend doesn't really change my point.

Wonder if there are most incidents at cricket matches than football matches in, say, India or Pakistan?
I think we are beginning to see a pattern. Where people are passionate about something they sometimes let their passion devolve into negative actions.

So football fans are more passionate than rugby fans?
Seriously?

Have just read that Welsh article in full and using it is a bit of a strawman to be honest.
Firstly, it's about arrests - so it doesn't really tie in with the things I mention in my article, which by and large are not arrestable offences.
Secondly, it's basically alcohol related issues that have been linked to sporting events. Not really about the hate and tribalism within the game and no mention of rival fans clashing etc.
It also compares a rugby international vs New Zealand against a football match vs Panama.

Agreed.
Whenever I go for a beer in my home town, I often see the school bulliers - never left the area, got crappy jobs and still behave in the same way they always have, as if they're somehow top of a pile.
Odd but ignorance is bliss, I suppose.

Some moronic Arsenal fan helpfully demonstrating the point last night. So angry he’s throwing coins at players. Pathetic.
