MATCH REPORT: Arsenal 3-1 Shrewsbury

Arsenal survived a scare in the Carling Cup third round, as League Two Shrewsbury Town looked like causing an upset.

Despite Marouane Chamakh twice testing Ben Smith's reflexes early on, Shrewsbury took a fairly unsurprising lead. Well, what you expect from the team that have already conceded eight goals in one game, had three men sent off and a fourth suspended, and kept Manuel Almunia on the books, all in the opening weeks of the season? James Collins headed in Marvin Morgan's cross to put the visitors in front.

The Shrews continued to test their Premier League opponents, but thankfully for the Gunners, it didn't take too long to find an equaliser. A little after the half hour, Carl Jenkinson's cross found fellow full-back Kieran Gibbs, who headed in. Park Ju-Young nearly opened his account with a powerful shot, but it was all square at the break.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was one of the better players on show for Arsenal, and his long-range effort slipped under Smith and into the net. The young Englishman came close to finding a third for his side, but it was another new signing, Yossi Benayoun, who finished the tie. Oguzhan Ozyakup set up the man on loan from Chelsea to make it 3-1.

A comfortable scoreline which didn't quite tell the full story, but at the end of the day, Arsenal are through to the next round of a competition that holds some recent bad memories for them.
