What does this say about Scottish football?

Brendan Rodgers leaving the top team in Scotland to join a mid table Premier League side with little or no chance Champions League football in the foreseeable future.

After the hype of Gerrard moving to Rangers, arguably generating a bit more interest in the Scottish Premier League, this move would suggest that there's still a lot of work to do for the league to be considered a top league.

Are you surprised at his decision and what do you think this says about Scottish football?

Ya have to back yourself I guess and he's a confident man.

I don't agree that it's embarrassing, but there is something to be said for the fact that he's taking a job that is very unlikely to involve European football and any form of league challenge to leave.

Why is it very unlikely to involve European football? I'm sure he feels he could get them challenging for a seventh place finish but not only that, he will feel if he does well he may get a move to a top club again. I'm sure Chelsea will be looking for a new manager at the end of next season latest for example. I think it's a good project to take on as they're better than their league position shows. They've got quite a few good young players too.

TOOR, you explain the answer yourself.

Effectively competing for a single place at best - very unlikely he’ll see European football as a manager and even if he does, it won’t be the CL.

Clearly a big step down in that regard.

Yes but there's no point being in the CL if the board don't match your ambition. He just won the domestic treble twice and probably would have done it a third time. What more can he do there when they don't let him improve the squad to compete better in the CL?

He will feel he can get Leicester into Europe and competing and that will feel like a challenge that he can feel a sense of achievement if he does it, knowing that bigger clubs will take note. It's a good opportunity which is why he didn't wait to pick up another few trophies at the end of the season. He had to take it.

Being in the CL isn't as a big a draw as you are making it. Not for clubs at the level of Celtic. It is probably a massive drag on the boss, getting through the qualifiers in the hope of a decent draw.

Very unlikely but, as Spurs and Leicester themselves have shown, not impossible

Celtic doing anything of note in Europe is very unlikely too and made near impossible by their lack of ambition as shown in the summer when Rodgers didn't get his targets.

I have to say that I rated Martin O'Neil's time at villa, when they were battling for 4th spot in 2009 and 2010, more highly than his title wins at Celtic. Rodgers probably feels that Leicester would be a bigger challenge. Probably thinks they have more ambition too

‘Yes, but...’

And then you go onto make a completely different point, unrelated to the one you questioned and got an answer for.

Don’t agree at all, I’d say it’s a massive thing for managers to compete at the top level and was probably the fixtures that Rodgers looked forward to the most. Who wouldn’t?

In which case your answer is a fairly damning indictment for Scottish football!
