The value of a League Title

Discussing the Champions League in work today and I made the point that winning the Champions League without winning your domestic league doesn't make you the best team in Europe.

I understand that the CL is the highest quality competition but it is still a cup competition with a knockout portion where anything can happen, as seen over the last two days.

I was met with what I thought were laughable opinions, to be honest. Such as "Does the FA Cup or the Premier League decide who is the best in England?"...

Obviously the Premier League as that is literally the reason they have leagues, to decide the best team in the country. So how can a team claim to be the best in Europe if a team from their own country is better than them?

Am I just old fashioned or is everyone around me a fecking idiot?

Real were the best team in Europe for the last 3 seasons, who was better than them over that period?

The Celtic comparison is a false equivelence because of the standard of the league. La Liga is the highest quality league in the world.

Having won 3 CL's in a row doesn't mean they were the best team each year. In one year they were and in two others they lost the league. In 2 of the 3 years they won it, it's arguable that Barca, Juve and Man City had been better than them over the long haul of a season rather than a few knockout ties.

No it's not.

4 Major trophies is better than 2. Simple maths.

Atletico won the league and made the CL final and lost in extra time. They were the better team that year than RM.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlético might have been better in 13/14 or not, but I'm not sure how the league title is the difference when it was effectively decided by a single goal. Barça took them right down to the wire, lost on h2h, and Madrid only finished 3 points back. Madrid also hammered Atlético in the cup and beat Barça in the final.

It's also arguable to claim Barça were better in 15/16 because they drew one more league game than Madrid if they couldn't even make it past Spain's third team in the CL quarter finals.

For clarity and fairness, Barça have also won the Spanish cup the last four years on the trot and qualified recently for the final again.

They’re on course for an unprecedented third domestic double in a row. Don’t know if that’s ever been achieved before in any of the major European leagues.

Sorry, scrap that, they didn’t do the double two years ago. I think this one would be their third domestic double in four seasons if they do it.

Lucky they never played Barca recently in the C/L then.

And they'd sell their club grandmother for three CLs

Not Madrid’s fault they didn’t though. If Barça had held up their part of the deal they’d have met every season.

And also ... while Barça have certainly had the measure of Madrid over the past few years, it’s actually been Madrid who’ve prevailed on 4 of the last 5 occasions they’ve met in finals.
