Have Barca messed up on De Ligt?

Lots of rumours coming out today and from some decent sources too that a deal to take him to Barca now looks incredibly difficult. United offering money they refuse to match.

Probably doesn't help the fact they have a ridiculous wage bill which is 80% of their revenue and they have added De Jong and possibly Griezmann to that. They simply can't afford all three this summer. Suarez Messi n Coutinho are on absolutely mental money per week.

Real chance for United this. Liverpool apparently not in the market for another CB and City don't usually go in that high on a single player. They also apparently don't like dealing with Raiola either which is very sensible really.

Lots of media outlets saying it's now us pushing hardest for him and we've offered Ajax a world record fee for him which Barca and no other club thus far is willing to match.

Hope Edwin is working his magic on him and that fat git Raiola. What an incredible coup it would be for us.

Nah, just making the point.

I don’t agree with the role agents play in football nowadays, but it is what it is, and they are clearly doing work on behalf of the clubs as well as the players, so I can see why the clubs are paying them rather than players. It’d probably cost the clubs more money if the players just paid them, because of the figures involved and taxes it’s probably better to just cut out the middle man.

This thread is a shining example of people discussing something they have absolutely no idea about but will arrogantly believe they do.

It isn't Monopoly, on what planet do you think it's even remotely sensible for a 19 year old, with what is most likely a fairly modest edication, to be negotiating contracts which have legal ramifications and clauses beyond their general comprehension. Which may define certain aspects of their career as well as off field earnings and who knows what else involved?

Sure, you walk in, you say '250 thousand of your finest English pounds per week please and chuck in some of those bonuses I've seen on football manager. Like another £5000 each time I am a substitute. No, make it £10,000. Or was it generally £7000 for' hot prospects'? I am a 'hot prospect' after all.

They agree (hoorah) and you sign a 5 year deal with a top football club. You even get an email afterwards, welcoming you to club and offering for you to have a friendly match with the under 23s so you can evaluate your squad.... Sorry, wrong bit of the game.

I have grown adults with degrees bring a union rep into an absence meeting but you think teenagers are perfectly capable of knowing how to do this for themselves ffs.

City don't usually go that high on players? To name defenders alone: Walker £50m, Stones £50m, Mendy £50m, Laporte £57m. Now that Kompany's left, they might be looking at a long-term club captain and no reason why he wouldn't fit the bill. Not saying they are in for him, but wouldn't be a surprise.

You seem to have dived in head first without realising there's no water in the pool.

I don't think anyone is suggesting youngsters rock up by themselves without any clue or guidance.

A player should certainly be offered/given some legal counsel to understand what is in front of them. I even suggested above that young academy players could be given some education in this and related fields as part of their development.

The point is not to ensure that young kids don't have access to legal aid when negotiating big money deals and contracts, but simply to point out that the current system whereby clubs and players are somewhat beholden to agents who's primary objective appears to be to fleece as much additional money out of clubs (and ultimately, fans) as possible is surely inadequate and could do with being overhauled.

World record fee? Are they going to pay more than 220 million euro?

Best young centre back in the world for me, if we get him. Far too weak for the prem and massively overrated, if we don't. I have never seen him play.

Top agents are very knowledgable in contract law. They are brilliant negotiators and have a wealth of connections through networking.

You think guys like Raiola just sit around all year until the summer and have a Harry Redknapp-esque conversation to just negotiate a higher salary. Job done.

They take care of many aspects of a players move. The time alone that needs to be invested in these is massive if done on your own.

Footballers just want to play and get paid. If the agent says i'll get you £350k but keep 10% then you take that all day long.

Before agents the players were getting fack all yet bringing in all the money

I've said it on another thread but how about we cap the cost of tickets and how much tv companies can charge fans to watch the games. After that it's down to the clubs, players, staff and agents to decide who gets what.

The most important thing is the fans aren't ripped off which is what's happening atm.

For a defender. It has to be answered already above. So £76m+.

They haven’t been great in the CL, though. Madrid on the otherhand...

But even though they do win it shouldn’t detract from the point - they’ve wasted loads of money.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah thats true. I think they still live off the Pep years a bit with the CL.

Also it's not their fault they came up against the best football team in the universe.

They cleaely need to sort their finances though. 700M in debt is crazy.
