Everybodys Golf PSVR review

Ok this has been out for a few days now, and I was eagerly awaiting the chance to play a full round in the comfort of my living room. Unfortunately it's release date coincided with a pretty hectic time at work, so wasn't able to give it a go on release date, and by the next day I was pretty knackered, and didn't really fancy standing up at the end of the day to play the game.

Still I decided to give it a quick try, just a few holes to see what the full release was like. 2 hours later I'm still playing. that in itself gives you an indication of how well this game works.

finally today I have managed to have a pretty decent go, all the things are still there from the demo. the big difference is now you get to go out on the course. Anyone thinking you are just going to play 18 holes from the start are going to be disappointed, you initially only have the option of playing a random 3 holes on one course. As you play depending on your shots and success you build points to unlock all sorts of things, and I am now able to play 9 holes, but still on a single course.

Choosing to play a round you are greeted by your caddy, of which there are more to unlock, annoyingly you have to listen to the same pretty speech about it being a lovely day and hoping your round will be just as beautiful, which I don't suppose takes that long, but playing 3 holes and listening to it again before being able to play another 3 is tiring. (just realised pressing circle you can skip this)

Still once out on the course the game really comes into it's own, Your caddy telling you what par it is and telling you once hit exactly where the ball has landed, Fairway, rough, bunker etc. which is not always clear from the tee. Hit a great shot they are excited for you, hit it out of bounds and they are suitably disappointed.

It is fair to say my initial thoughts of challenging for a place in the next Rider cup team were quickly dashed. It is one thing practicing on the range it is another on the course, there are no redo's, so a bad shot and all of a sudden that birdie becomes a par and that par quickly falls to a bogey after failing your putt.

I don't play golf, but I can imagine my frustration at wildly slicing the ball, to the satisfaction of pulling off an amazing recovery is how golf would feel in real life. The game in VR really closes the gap between simply playing the game and becoming part of it. not only are you literally on the course, actually going through the motion of swinging the club while trying to calculate how hard to hit the thing, is incredibly rewarding, only to look up and see you have under hit it or pulled it to the right My best is +2 over nine holes.

There are all sorts of things to unlock, I'm still working towards unlocking the full 18 holes, but new courses and even new clubs, I now have a driver that will play much straighter, but loses some range. ( I haven't used it, seems like cheating) You can also unlock new colour outfits for your caddy, or caddies. which does feel like some reward for hacking your way round the course. although a caddy in a summer dress and heeled sandles wouldn't be popular at most golf courses

One of the major disappointments is the lack of multiplayer, It is basically you vs the course, which I suppose at least saves you having to suffer your mate laughing as your hacking your way through the rough

So is this game worth playing? absolutely, this sort of experience really shows the potential VR has in gaming, and is as close as most will ever get to playing golf in their living room, time to play another round byee

Good review, must admit golf wouldn’t be in my vr but it sounds intriguing.

Baz, if you have VR download the demo, it gives a good idea of how it plays.

Just unlocked the full 18 holes My best is -3 over nine holes, but I'm averaging about +2 over nine, which is definitely an improvement.

My first 18 holes, I finished +5, I can live with that, especially as I'm experimenting a little, with my golf swing and putting. I'm pretty sure I can at least get par with a little more practice.
